Critics think ‘Deadpool 2’ is more of the same

TwitterFacebook

Can a sequel ever surpass the original, or will it fall flat and make no impression? In the case of Deadpool 2, results are somewhere in between, but skewing toward favorably justifying the film’s existenceMashable’s Angie Han says you’ll probably love it if you loved the first one, but that it may not surprise fans as Deadpool did.

The evolving humor

Susana Polo, Polygon:

All these pieces are interesting in their own right but the connective tissue between them is about as subtle and smooth as the strained tendon in the neck of a Rob Liefeld character. Wade’s voiceover monologuing is fun when it supplements what’s on the screen, not when it’s forced to do the lion’s share of emotional exposition. Read more…

New ‘Deadpool 2’ trailer follows up on that David Beckham joke

TwitterFacebook

Deadpool isn’t one to mince words, but even the Merc with a mouth has to apologize sometimes. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) paid a visit to David Beckham to say sorry for a joke in the first Deadpool movie about the athlete’s voice.

Reynolds shared the video to his Twitter feed with the #Deadpool2 hashtag and caption “Little known fact: Canadians are born with a black belt in apology.”

In the video, Reynolds-as-Deadpool shows up at Beckham’s house apologizing profusely, bringing a bunch of balloons (too soon) and an entire mariachi band before Beckham relents with an “I can’t stay mad at you.” But he wasn’t just mad about the Deadpool joke – he lists Reynolds’ other offenses, namely bad movies like Green Lantern and Blade: Trinity. Deadpool is really angry Canada didn’t get invited to Eurovision

TwitterFacebook

An injustice on a scale hitherto unheard of.

Super-not-quite-hero Deadpool weighed in quite unexpectedly on the Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday.

Evidently the Merc with a Mouth is angry that Canada has been snubbed from the competition. He explained his position with a handy video:

You’ve awakened a sleeping moose, Europe#deadpool2 pic.twitter.com/ZgpTUwLAJZ

— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) May 8, 2018

To be fair, he makes a good point. Plus, Deadpool competing in Eurovision would essentially end all forms of media, ever.

This is the one joke that was too much for ‘Deadpool 2’

TwitterFacebook

Deadpool is known for his raunchy humor, but apparently there’s a line that even the fourth-wall-breaking character won’t cross.

Ryan Reynolds, the star of Deadpool 2, told Entertainment Weekly that there was one joke that 20th Century Fox wouldn’t allow in the movie: a joke about Disney. Reynolds co-wrote the movie with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and he wasn’t exactly happy about the joke being cut.

“This is a sore spot for me because there’s a joke in the movie that is not in the movie now because — I’m probably not even allowed to say this — Fox made me take it out,” Reynolds told EW. “It had more to do with Disney, and they made me take it out. As I look back at it, I think maybe that was a wise decision.” Read more…

It’s OK: Ryan Reynolds never watched ‘Green Lantern’ either

TwitterFacebook

Today in Hard Same entertainment news, Ryan Reynolds admitted that he never even watched his first superhero movie in full, the 2011 flop Green Lantern.

“Look, I’ve never seen the full final version of Green Lantern,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I saw a very late stage rough cut of the film.”

The topic came up in an interview promoting the upcoming sequel to Reynolds much more successful superhero franchise, Deadpool. In the satirical, meta, and R-rated surprise 2016 hit, the Reynold’s character, Wade Wilson, takes some pretty self-depricating jabs at his first failed superhero flick.  Read more…

‘Deadpool 2’ pop-up bars will let you feast on chimichangas and… pizza?

TwitterFacebook

Sister Margaret’s School for Wayward Children is hitting the road.

Movie Deadpool’s bar of choice is getting the pop-up treatment ahead of Deadpool 2 hitting theaters next month (h/t The Hollywood Reporter). It’s coming to New York and Los Angeles only, but honestly, LA gets the better deal here.

The New York engagement will happen first, with the pop-up appearing at the Alligator Lounge in Brooklyn from April 26-28. Attendees — who must be 21 or older, obviously — will be treated to free pizza.

Here’s where the NY side of this deal gets lame: Alligator Lounge already serves free slices with every drink. Sure, pizza is a New York thing. But it’s not really a Deadpool thing. It’s a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles thing. Read more…

Get pumped for ‘Deadpool 2’ with all sorts of merchandise available now

In a year of epic superhero movie landmarks like Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, one superhero will likely stand on his own as a hilariously irreverent sidebar among 2018’s film releases. Of course, we’re talking about everyone’s favorite “…
