We used Boring’s Not-A-Flamethrower to burn away the worst of 2018

TwitterFacebook

As 2018 comes to a close, it’s hard not to look back at the year with some bitterness.

Okay, okay, 2018 wasn’t complete trash for everyone. But for all the highs, there were an equal amount (if not more) lows that made the year kind of suck.

We’re not here to be a Debbie Downer and dredge up all the bad moments 2018 threw at us, so instead we’re using this very last day of the year to cleanse the past and ring in 2019 in Mashable style: by burning it all away 🔥.

Armed with our new little friend, the Boring Not-A-Flamethrower, we torched some of the year’s worst times — trends and products that rightfully deserved to be incinerated. Read more…

The Boring Company is alarmingly chill with kids and dogs at its flamethrower pick-up event

TwitterFacebook

Let’s be real for a minute: Just because you put “not” in front of something doesn’t really mean it is not that thing.

While Borat is still working on his ability in this area, The Boring Company is handing out its Not-A-Flamethrowers to faithful customers who are eager to get there hands on them. Pick-up parties, as they’re being called, started in Los Angeles a few weeks back, and there was one in Washington D.C. on Saturday.

Alarm bells are ringing after the D.C. event, however, with kids and dogs appearing in more than a few photos posted on The Boring Company’s Twitter feed. Now that just seems unsafe. The idea of a company endorsing the visual of a kid hanging out next to — or even firing — a flamethrower seems surreal. Read more…

Elon Musk’s flamethrowers have rhyming, ridiculous terms and conditions

TwitterFacebook

Of course Elon Musk’s joke-turned-real-product flamethrowers (sorry, “not-a-flamethrowers”) have the most ridiculous terms and conditions.

Thursday morning Musk’s tunnel and construction business, The Boring Company, emailed out lawyer-approved terms for anyone who ordered the eccentric billionaire’s barely legal idea. Since the not-a-flamethrowers are technically torches that don’t actually throw balls of fire they are mostly allowed, but they still produce flames of real, hot heat.

The term sheet was anything but dry. It opened with a rhyming section and continued with self-deprecating jokes and humor about the sold-out $500 devices.  You are signing on to all responsibility for “showing off to my friends or romantic interests.”  Read more…

Elon Musk raised a significant chunk of money for his tunnel boring venture, the aptly named Boring Company, via sales of a heavily marked up ‘flamethrower’ with Boring Co. branding. Elon Musk’s flamethrower may be a bad idea, but it’s perfectly legal

Generally, flamethrowers are legal.

Just as Elon Musk has incited enthusiasm, discourse, and frustration about the realities of colonizing Mars, he has successfully done something similar for flamethrowers. His tunneling company, The Boring Company, sold 20,000 flamethrowers this week and is now sold out of the $500 flame igniters.

A flamethrower generally refers to a stream of fire emitted from some sort of torch-like contraption — not actual balls of fire being hurled or thrown into the air. Elon Musk’s flamethrower, for instance, produces a stream of fire that looks to be a foot or so in length — although flamethrowers can certainly produce longer flames. Read more…
