iOS 12 will let users register another person to their Face ID

From advancements in AR to Memojis to group FaceTime, there is plenty to be excited about with iOS 12. But one of the more practical updates to Apple’s mobile operating system, coming this fall, went unmentioned during the keynote at WWDC. According to 9to5Mac, iOS 12 will allow for two different faces to be registered […]

8 things Apple didn’t tell us about iOS 12

TwitterFacebook

When Apple unveils a new version of iOS, it doesn’t mess around.

Senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi blazed through slide after slide at the WWDC 2018 keynote to show us almost everything new in iOS 12 — from new camera effects to a suite of tools to help manage device addiction, and of course those “Memoji.”

It’s one thing to show a new feature, however. Quite another to use it.

I got a chance to try out a few of the new iOS 12 tricks with an Apple-provided iPhone running the beta version of the update. While I couldn’t take any pictures, Apple did answer some questions it didn’t address in the keynote. Read more…

With iOS 12, Apple says updates won’t slow your iPhone anymore

TwitterFacebook

Apple loves, loves, boasting about how it supports older iPhones and iPads with new versions of iOS.

That’s great for squeezing more life out of an aging iOS device, but what Apple never tells people is that updating the software almost always slows them down — sometimes to the point where they’re  so sluggish your only option is to get a new device.

With iOS 12, Apple sort of acknowledged this slowdown on older devices, while simultaneously announcing efforts to speed up performance.

“For iOS 12, we are doubling down on performance,” Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, said during WWDC’s opening keynote. “We’re working top to bottom making improvements to make your device faster and more responsive. We’re focusing our efforts especially on the oldest devices.” Read more…

RIP Bitmoji: Apple debuts ‘Memoji’ with iOS 12

TwitterFacebook

Snapchat may be shaking, because Apple will now let you become an Animoji with their new Memoji feature.

You’ll remember Animojis as those 3D emojis capable of replicating your facial expressions and voice. The key difference with Memoji? Instead of being a bear or tiger, you can be yourself.

You might be doing a double take with Samsung’s AR Emoji, but don’t. While similar, Apple’s Memoji look much less awkward, and they allow for more customizations.

As demoed on stage at WWDC 18, you’ll be able to create your own Memoji in the Messages app in iOS 12. (The new OS should launch in the fall.) You start off by choosing skin color and hairstyle. From there, you can customize almost every other feature, from earrings to glasses and much more. Read more…
