‘Late Night’ trailer starring Mindy Kaling previews your new fave movie

It wouldn’t be a great Mindy Kaling comedy if she didn’t get hit with a garbage bag at least once and provided iconic one-liners, right?

In Late Night, she plays writer Molly Patel, a new hire for late night host Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) as a means to revive her show.

Helmed by director Nisha Ganatra and written by Kaling, the workplace buddy comedy also stars John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, and Denis O’Hare — and it’s giving us major Devil Wears Prada vibes.

After a buzzy premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this year, Amazon Studios bought the rights for its distribution for $13 millionLate Night hits theaters on June 7.  Read more…

5 things to know from this year’s Sundance Film Festival

TwitterFacebook

It is both the best thing and the worst thing about Sundance that it’s hard to know, in any given year, exactly what to expect. Big-name stars show off unexpected depths; unknown talents get big seemingly overnight; oddball trends start to take shape.

It’s only when you look back that the patterns and lessons emerge. And while it’s worth acknowledging that Sundance is so big, no two attendees will have exactly the same experience, there were a few themes that kept coming up again and again during my time there.

Here are five conversations I couldn’t stop having – along with a comprehensive list of all our reviews from the fest. Read more…

Seth Meyers absolutely slams Trump’s rejected shutdown offer

TwitterFacebook

Feeling a little lost on where we’re at with the longest government shutdown in American history?

For “A Closer Look” on Monday, Late Night host Seth Meyers unpacked Donald Trump’s (undeniably breathy) speech about the shutdown, and his rejected deal to end it — and land that $5.7 billion for his border wall.

As Meyers points out, Trump’s deal which offered limited protections for young, undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers — more specifically, three-year extensions on DACA and TPS protections — was rejected by Democrats and hard-line conservatives alike. And as Meyers put it, the offer wasn’t the most solid proposal. Read more…

Stephen Colbert declares Infowars’ Alex Jones has lost his ‘war on info’

TwitterFacebook

The Great War on Info is no more, according to Stephen Colbert, for Alex Jones has lost it.

On Tuesday night, the late night host destroyed the “extreme right-wing conspiracy theorist and bath salt spokesmodel,” who recently had his content removed from huge platforms like Apple, Google, Spotify, Facebook, and even Pinterest.

“Now if you want to see one of Jones’ signature rants, you’ll have to be in the next booth at Ruby Tuesday’s when he sees a mother breastfeeding,” Colbert said.

Colbert then went on to revive his Jones-inspired character — Brain Fight radio host Tuck Buckford — who is coincidentally dealing with very similar struggles at this moment in time. Read more…

Melania Trump’s literally careless jacket gets roasted by late show hosts

TwitterFacebook

Melania Trump’s decision to wear that jacket to visit shelters and facilities for immigrant children at the U.S. border was not lost on late show hosts.

In fact, the subject of the First Lady’s tone deaf fashion choice — a Zara jacket emblazoned with the words “I really don’t care, do u?” — on Thursday was almost too easy for them.

Trevor Noah, who’s had just about enough of this shit, cut straight to the chase.

“It looks like when Melania was in the hospital, she had her last fuck removed,” he said on The Daily Show Thursday night. Read more…

Conan O’Brien and Bill Hader find ‘God of War’ too close to home

TwitterFacebook

Even Conan O’Brien’s playing God of War.

For his latest “Clueless Gamer” segment, the Late Night host wielded a Leviathan axe to play the wildly popular game with “the ultimate He-Man,” actor and comedian Bill Hader.

The pair gave their most brutal, unimpressed commentary to PlayStation’s record-breaking smash hit —  the game sold 3.1 million copies in its first three days, making it the fastest-selling PS4-exclusive ever.

Fair warning, God of War megafans, they’re not exactly kind to the game. “This is recreating the awkward silences I’ve had with my father,” says O’Brien of the relationship between protagonist Kratos and his son Atreus. Too close to home, eh? Read more…
