Netflix’s ‘Queer Eye’ reboot is all about empathy at a time when we really need it

TwitterFacebook

When Queer Eye for the Straight Guy premiered in 2003, in the middle of another contentious Republican presidency, being gay in America didn’t look like it does today. Straight actors played gay characters in mainstream shows like Will and Grace and Queer as Folk. Then Queer Eye came along depicting gay men as professional experts. Though it moved the needle, there was still work to be done.

“Before it was just one thing: We make things pretty,” said Tan France of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot. “That’s not enough. We want to be accepted as real members of the community.”

This time around, viewers will meet a new Fab Five. It’s a team that includes two married men, a single father, and proud black and Muslim experts to paint a more holistic view of being gay in America. Read more…

5 YouTube workouts you’ll actually want to do

TwitterFacebook

For the unseasoned athlete, YouTube workouts can be pretty difficult. For some people (hello), they can also feel deeply embarrassing.

A particularly good resource is Instagram, which is full of professionally staged homes as well as personal shots. I prefer to look at the latter, though. Since I have a real home, I want to see what someone’s real home looks like.

So where the hell is everyone’s stuff?

Woman pens open letter to Instagram because her feed is inundated with bras

TwitterFacebook

A woman has penned an open letter to Instagram because she’s sick of seeing adverts for bras. But, her piece has raised an important question about Instagram’s algorithm and whether we can do anything to alter the ads in our feeds?

In a Medium post entitled “Towards a bra-free Instagram experience”, Lauren Hallden—who works as a product designer in Philadelphia—put a question to Instagram: “Does your company collect any user feedback from women?” The reason for this question is because Hallden says the sponsored content in her Instagram feed is “kind of one-note” as it only shows her photos of women working out in sports bras.  Read more…
