‘Avengers: Infinity War’ will hit theaters sooner than we thought

Our return trip to Wakanda is happening just a little bit earlier than expected.

Marvel Studios announced today that Avengers: Infinity War will burst into theaters Apr. 27 – one full week earlier than the previously announced May 4 release date.

According to the official Avengers Twitter account, we’ve got Robert Downey Jr., a.k.a. Tony Stark, to thank for that.

Disney celebrates ‘Black Panther’s success by donating $1 million to kids in STEM

TwitterFacebook

Yes, Black Panther’s Wakanda isn’t real — technically. But life continues to mimic art, as the film inspires more real-world activism tackling the film’s underlying themes of black empowerment.

To celebrate the Marvel movie’s unprecedented, record-breaking box office success, Disney is donating $1 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. According to a press release, the organization is dedicated to supporting young people in STEM, with a specific focus on underserved communities.

“It is thrilling to see how inspired young audiences were by the spectacular technology in the film,”  Disney CEO Robert A. Iger said in a statement. “So it’s fitting that we show our appreciation by helping advance STEM programs for youth, especially in underserved areas of the country, to give them the knowledge and tools to build the future they want.” Read more…

Marvel hasn’t ever seen a success like ‘Black Panther’ before

TwitterFacebook

In its opening weekend, Black Panther broke records. But in its second weekend, Marvel’s latest showed us it’s here to stay.

Black Panther‘s estimated three-day box office total in the United States for Friday-Saturday-Sunday comes out to $108 million. After 10 days in theaters, its domestic box office total (i.e. only here in the U.S.) is $400 million.

That climb ranks alongside Jurassic World as the second-fastest box office ascent in Hollywood history. Both of them fall behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which got to $400 million even faster. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, however, Black Panther is #1The Avengers needed 14 days to log the same achievement. Read more…

‘Black Panther’ is already starting to eclipse ‘The Avengers’ at the box office

TwitterFacebook

Keep hailing the king, because Black Panther continues to blow Marvel’s box office expectations to smithereens with the kinetic force of a vibranium suit.

The Ryan Coogler-directed blockbuster was already breaking all sorts of box office records during its opening Presidents Day weekend release. Throughout the rest of the week, though, it only continued the trend, raking in the best Monday and Thursday for any Marvel Cinematic Universe title.

To put that in plain terms: This means Black Panther had the best first week at the box office of any MCU movie ever — bypassing The Avengers‘ $270M with an astounding $292M. And the king didn’t even need the whole pantheon of Marvel heroes like The Avengers did. Wakanda earned these numbers all on its own, with a cast that largely featured previously unknown MCU characters. Read more…

Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

The overwhelming feeling most experienced after leaving Black Panther was: we want more. Now. None of us wanted to ever leave Wakanda — and we never have to in our imaginations.

Because luckily, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already hinted at the “many, many stories to tell” from the comics in upcoming Black Panther films, and that he “absolutely” wants director Ryan Coogler to return again.

That’s our queue, internet: LET THE FEVER DREAMS BEGIN.

‘Black Panther’ director sends touching thank you note to fans

TwitterFacebook

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler just got all mushy on us.

The director tweeted a touching thank you note to fans on Tuesday, celebrating the film’s immense success.

And he’s right to gush — Black Panther not only nailed the biggest opening weekend for a solo Marvel movie, it has globally grossed $426.6 million to date, and is currently sitting at 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (it was previously 100 percent, some people just suck).

“Never in a million years did we imagine that you would all come out this strong,” wrote Coogler.  Read more…

What your favorite ‘Black Panther’ crush says about you

TwitterFacebook

Excited for Black Panther? So are we. Which is why we’re rolling out obsessive coverage with Black Panther Week.

The Marvel universe never lacked baes. But Black Panther raised the bar to untold heights, by introducing such an overwhelming abundance of marriage-quality characters that even the most hydrated among us could not stave off the thirst.

At any given time, there are anywhere from one to six baes on screen at the same time in Black Panther. That’s a lot to handle. And the same question hangs over our heads throughout the movie: who is most bae? Which among this wide array of uniquely complex, multi-layered, and – of course – sexy characters reigns as queen or king of your heart? Read more…

‘Black Panther’ gets first bad review for dumbest reason imaginable

Critical reviews are always subjective opinions. So in general, you can’t really say a reviewer got it objectively “wrong.”

Facebook deletes angry DC fanboy group trying to bring down ‘Black Panther’

TwitterFacebook

Dear bitter internet trolls who are pissed that Black Panther is already blowing every superhero movie out of the water: boy, bye.

That’s basically what Rotten Tomatoes and Facebook told a short-lived campaign to bring down the upcoming film’s audience score before anyone even saw the damn thing. After critics who attended early screenings of Black Panther raved about it on social media, a Facebook group titled “Down with Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and its Fanboys” cropped up.

It accrued roughly 4,000 angry fanboys — before promptly being shut the hell down.

The group claimed it was motivated by a now familiar and hilariously misinformed conspiracy theory: Touted by DC fans, it alleges that Disney somehow pays off nearly every critic from every major publication to trash DC movies. Read more…
