K-pop and a kid guitarist ruled the Olympics closing ceremony

TwitterFacebook

Athletes bid farewell to Pyeongchang on Sunday at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

But among the usual speeches, rituals, and parades, K-pop and a kid guitarist came out on top. Or they were the crowd-pleasers, anyway — the closing ceremony is blessedly free of competition.

13-year-old guitarist Yang Tae-hwan played a variation on “Winter” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons as part of a celebration of “hallyu” — a term used to describe the “Korean wave” of ubiquity that Korean popular culture has achieved over the past several decades. Read more…

The nation is ready to give Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim all the junk food she wants

TwitterFacebook

Chloe Kim, one of Team USA’s early breakout stars of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, will probably never have to pay for a burrito or breakfast sandwich again for the rest of her life.

It all started when Kim captured America’s collective heart not just by being an amazing snowboarder but by tweeting — including during competition — about her desire to consume a bunch of junk food, perhaps the most American of pastimes.

Oh and I also had 2 churros today and they were pretty bomb so if you ever get nervous go eat a churro

Please enjoy these photos of an Olympic coach knitting on the slopes

When the stakes are high, this Finnish Olympic snowboarding coach stays cool with a little light, slope-side crafting.

As Yahoo Sports noted (via HuffPost), Antti Koskinen of Finland was spotted knitting this weekend at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. How pleasant!

Snowboarder recovers from horrific accident to win Olympic medal

TwitterFacebook

In March 2017, Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris laid in a hospital bed with fractured ribs, a fractured left arm, pelvis, and jaw, along with a ruptured spleen and collapsed left lung.

On Saturday, less than a year after he slammed into a tree while backcountry snowboarding, McMorris claimed an Olympic bronze medal in the men’s slopestyle event.

“I’m trying not to think too much about the past today,” he said to reporters after his improbable victory. “A lot of times I need to pinch myself. There have been some low times, but these high times make it worthwhile.”  Read more…

Drones set a Guinness World Record at the Winter Olympics

TwitterFacebook

More than 1,200 drones lit up the sky at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics.

That’s a Guinness World Record for the most unmanned drones flown simultaneously, beating the previous record of 500 in Germany in 2016. Both records involved Intel’s Shooting Star drones.

The 1,218-drone light show in South Korea was pre-recorded. Still, 300 of them made a live appearance at the opening ceremony, forming the shape of the Olympic rings.

Intel’s drones—which each weigh a little more than half a pound—have flown above crowds in Singapore, at the Super Bowl last weekend in the shape of the American flag, and at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles last year in the shape of the Wonder Woman logo. They’ll pop up throughout the Winter Olympics during medal ceremonies. Read more…
