Dictonary.com just came for Roseanne Barr and her racist comments

TwitterFacebook

Roseanne Barr is the subject of countless headlines and tweets on Tuesday after posting racist remarks on Twitter before announcing she would be leaving the platform altogether.

Barr’s since-deleted tweet was pointed towards Barack Obama’s former advisor Valerie Jarrett, saying if the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

As noted by many Twitter users, some outlets covered the incident without explicitly calling the behavior “racist.” Instead, they chose to initially use words or phrases like “bizarre,” “offensive,” or “racially charged.” Believe it or not, Dictionary.com is on the front lines, calling them out.  Read more…

Darlene may not be gay, but ‘Roseanne’ is still trying to push LGBTQ people forward

TwitterFacebook

If you were a queer kid growing up in the ’90s, there was one place you could turn to for support — your family your school Roseanne.

Remember, this was the pre-Drag Race era. Whatever you think of the show now, back then, the show was remarkably ahead of its time when it came to the LGBTQ community. Roseanne the character, whose friends included a bisexual woman and a gay man, sparked a feud with ABC when she became one of the first women to kiss another woman on air in 1994.

Roseanne was one of the earliest shows on television to depict a gay wedding. And even though Darlene technically wasn’t out as a lesbian, she became a gay icon for the haven’t-yet-realized-they’re-queer teen community. (As a member of this demo, I have yet to recover from my lingering resentment of David.) Read more…

The new Roseanne has a lot of fans, and one of them is Donald Trump.

President Trump called up Roseanne Barr to congratulate her on the monster ratings for the show’s return, as first reported by The New York Times.

Barr shared her thoughts on the call with the hosts of Good Morning America Thursday. “It was pretty exciting, I’ll tell you that much,” she said. “It was very sweet of him to congratulate us.”

She added, “He was just happy for me. I’ve known him for a lot of years and he’s done a lot of nice things for me over the years and it’s a friendly conversation about working, television and ratings.” Read more…

Roseanne Conner wasn’t always a Trump supporter in the ‘Roseanne’ revival

TwitterFacebook

Roseanne Conner, of Roseanne, is a Donald Trump supporter. But that wasn’t always the case.

Co-executive producer Bruce Rasmussen, also a writer on the original series, revealed recently that TV Roseanne (not to be confused with IRL Roseanne Barr) started out as more of a lefty. It was Barr herself who pushed for her TV character to break for Trump.

“Originally I thought, like everybody else, that she would not be a supporter of Trump,” Rasmussen told EW. “But the moment we got in the writers’ room with Roseanne, she really wanted to be a supporter of Trump, not because she is one herself, but there are a lot of people in the Midwest who voted for him.” Read more…
