Woman is awarded $6.4 million in one of the largest revenge porn cases ever

TwitterFacebook

$6.4 million. That’s the latest bill for sharing revenge porn.

In a landmark case in California, one of the largest ever judgements in a revenge porn case has seen the United States District Court awarding $6.4 million to a Los Angeles County woman.

Reported by The New York Times, the plaintiff, listed anonymously as Jane Doe, sued her former partner, David K. Elam II, in December 2014 for sharing explicit photographs — private images she had sent while they were dating — on porn sites, including identified revenge porn site MyEx, after their break-up in 2013. Eight images were allegedly shared straight to Tumblr. Read more…

Surprising PSA reveals hidden truth about sexual abuse

TwitterFacebook

When picturing a survivor of sexual abuse, you might immediately imagine a girl or woman, especially now in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

An emotional new PSA, however, wants to broaden your perceptions about survivors to include boys and men.

The 5-minute spot was produced by 1in6, a nonprofit organization that helps men who’ve had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences. It begins with five actresses reading heartbreaking accounts of sexual abuse and assault. When they finish, the director asks how the women would respond to the story if they had the chance.   Read more…

Aly Raisman says blaming leotards for sexual abuse is victim-shaming

TwitterFacebook

Aly Raisman is tired of victim-shaming over clothing choices.

The U.S. Olympic gymnast tweeted on Sunday that “Leotards r not the problem,” calling out critics of the gymnastics uniform for victim-shaming and “implying survivors should feel it’s their fault.”

Raisman, an outspoken activist for survivors of sexual assault, also called out enablers of abuse against children and young people, saying, “The real problem is the pedophiles out there and the adults who enable them.”

I was recently asked if gymnasts should continue wearing leotards. Leotards r not the problem. The problem is the many pedophiles out there & the adults who enable them. By saying clothing is part of the issue, u are victim shaming/implying survivors should feel it’s their fault.

Watch Funny Or Die’s uncomfortable #MeToo PSA starring Evan Rachel Wood

TwitterFacebook

Funny Or Die has released a #MeToo-inspired PSA, that’s intensely uncomfortable.

Starring Westworld‘s Evan Rachel Wood, Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s Kelly Marie Tran, Tony nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and a voice-over from Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany, the video attempts to engage with the #MeToo campaign against systemic sexual abuse in Hollywood.

Using a Guess Who game. Yeah. Featuring game “characters” Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Terry Richardson, Kevin Spacey, Louis CK, and numerous other men who have been accused of sexual assault, harassment, and misconduct.

It seems flippant but it’s a genuine PSA, directed by an all-female crew and calling for people to join Rise, a national civil rights nonprofit working to implement a Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights. Wood testifies with Rise on behalf of sexual assault survivors in Capitol Hill on Feb. 27 — hence the timing of the skit. Read more…

Gymnast Aly Raisman took out a full-page ad to thank everyone involved in the Larry Nassar trial

TwitterFacebook

The trial of Larry Nassar has ended, but the conversation about sexual assault and accountability continues on — in part thanks to the outspoken Olympic gold-medalist Aly Raisman.

In Lansing, Michigan, under the gavel of Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, the sexual abuser received a 40-175 year sentence for his horrendous acts of violence against over 150 women, many of whom gave statements in court during the week-long trial.

Raisman was among them, and she recognized her colleagues in a powerful way: a full-page ad in the Detroit Free Press thanking the victims by name (and by number, for those who did not want to go public). Read more…

Dylan Farrow expertly calls out Justin Timberlake’s hypocrisy by using his own tweet

TwitterFacebook

Justin Timberlake isn’t a stranger to controversy, so you would think he would know better than to walk right into a Twitter storm, but here we are.

The singer, who is busy promoting his upcoming album Man of the Woods, waded back into the pool of bad decisions after wearing a Time’s Up pin at this year’s Golden Globes, despite working with director Woody Allen, who has been accused of sexual assault by his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.

Farrow has been outspoken about the hypocrisy of Hollywood heavyweights who don’t walk the talk—or in other words, who support women who have endured sexual misconduct and yet continue to work with those accused of that very same misconduct. But just in case Timberlake wasn’t clear on how he is a part of the problem too, on Tuesday, Farrow responded to one of his tweets in an exchange that is *chef’s kiss* perfection.  Read more…
