‘One Day at a Time’ season 3 deftly handles consent and toxic masculinity

Netflix’s modern reboot of One Day at a Time is truly crafty. Just when you think you’ve signed up for a lighthearted family sitcom, it hits you with poignant takes on social issues.

In its third season, which dropped on February 8, series co-developers Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce apply this winning formula to consent, toxic masculinity, sexual harassment, female and queer empowerment through the lenses of generation and gender.

But ODAAT stands out because it offers a unique point of view, showing how a regular family can and should deal with these issues. Read more…

Dick appointment makeup tutorials are the only good beauty guru niche left

TwitterFacebook

Dick appointment makeup tutorials are the only good thing left from beauty YouTube.

As cuffing season picks up, people are bound to schedule a quick dick appointment. But how do you make sure your makeup stays flawless through the hook up, and be reminded to have safe, consensual sex? Beauty guru YouTube is here for you.

The term “dick appointment” is self-explanatory; Urban Dictionary defines it as “to set up an appointment to have sex with a man.” A second entry clarifies that “no feelings are involved” in the interaction. Unlike a drunk one night stand you bring home from a party or a late night “u up?” text, a dick appointment is often premeditated — which gives the appointee some time to actually prepare for it.  Read more…

‘Jane the Virgin’ is showing how sexy conversations about consent can be

TwitterFacebook

Warning: The following post contains spoilers for the most recent episode of Jane the Virgin.

Let’s begin this post with a necessary disclaimer: If you aren’t watching Jane the Virgin, you should be. The CW’s effervescent telanovela about a woman who’s accidentally artificially inseminated is now so much more; it’s a dense drama about complicated relationships, with some light fantasy and scintillating scandal thrown in.

“Chapter Seventy-Two” is the midseason premiere of Season 4, and it effortlessly portrays how consent should work – without every appearing to be a lesson or underlining its message in red. Read more…

Hey Aziz Ansari defenders, saying ‘no’ is more complex than you think

TwitterFacebook

It took very little time for the same-old deeply dangerous rhetoric to rear its ugly head after the publication of a report accusing Aziz Ansari of sexual misconduct. In the anonymous report—published over the weekend by Babe—a woman shares her account the alleged misconduct which took place on a date in September 2017.

The responses to the woman’s story are peppered with the word “should.” She should have said no; she should have walked out; she should never have taken off her clothes; she shouldn’t have been there in the first place. These responses, which are disturbingly widespread, not only shift the blame and responsibility onto the woman, they also fail to recognise an important truth. For many women, uttering an explicit “no” is not as easy or straightforward as you might think. Read more…
