The ‘Solo’ premiere gave us some of the biggest Star Wars surprises yet

TwitterFacebook

HOLLYWOOD — When the invites came in for the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 10, the date was curious enough to raise the eyebrows of a Wookiee.

The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi: all three Star Wars movies of the Disney era so far had shut down multiple blocks with show-stopping Saturday night festivities. (We reported on them here, here and here)Solo would have its coming out party on … a Thursday

What? The galaxy’s greatest scoundrel didn’t deserve a weekend-level rager too? Was this a subtle sign that Lucasfilm was embarrassed by the Young Han Solo flick, which infamously changed directors midstream, and was trying to brush it under the red carpet? Would Hollywood Boulevard not shut down for Star Wars this time? The longer the details were delayed, the more suspect it seemed.  Read more…

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ clip confirms Donald Glover’s Lando is going to be the breakout star

TwitterFacebook

As we all know, Donald Glover as Lando is already the best thing about Solo: A Star Wars Story. And the most recent clip released for the movie only further solidifies this truth.

It shows the first moment that Han (whose name we shall heretofore purposefully mispronounce in support of Lando) meets the most charming smuggler in all the galaxy. There’s even a quick shot of Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra.

We happen upon Lando just as he’s claiming some gambling rewards. “There’s no liars in this game, only players,” he says, to the aliens he clearly just lied to and played like a fiddle.

Oh Lando — no matter how much of a rapscallion you are, we’ve gotta hate the game and not the player. Read more…

Lando Calrissian makes his ‘Saturday Night Live’ debut to address diversity in space

TwitterFacebook

We won’t actually get to see Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story until May 25, but thanks to Glover’s double duty gig on Saturday Night Live this weekend, we get a sneak glimpse of Calrissian in the comedy space.

In the sketch, Lando hosts a summit gathering all the black folks in the galaxy — all four of themRogue One‘s Saw Gerrera, played hysterically by Kenan Thompson, makes an appearance to address the very empty room. It’s a biting commentary on the lack of diversity in the franchise, that can be summed up perfectly in one line:

“I would like to read a list of all the black humans who lived before us to honor their of all the black humans who lived before us to honor their memory,” Thompson says. “Mace Windu.” Read more…
