I just don’t understand these cheesy virtual reality movie ‘experiences’

I’ve always believed that virtual reality has huge potential as an entertainment platform, and clearly some directors are still with me. Oculus supported five “experiences” that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, one of which landed a seven-figure deal

The experiences are innovative and interesting — but they’re suffering from an identity crisis.

A few months ago I sampled “Coco VR,” a “VR Experience” based on the movie Coco, which was forthcoming at the time. I ran around an animated Land of the Dead in the form of a skeleton, touring an art museum, seeing a mariachi performance, and trying on skeleton costumes.  Read more…

‘Ophelia’ starring Daisy Ridley leaves a lot to be desired

The premise of Claire McCarthy’s new movie, Ophelia, is simple. What if William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was told not through the mopey prince, but his love interest, Ophelia? Perhaps then, she could have a personality instead of a watery tragic end.

That idea might have been interesting if fully realized, which this Ophelia, which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival, is not. The movie makes a few intriguing choices but stumbles in terms of craft and writing – neither of which you can really sacrifice when adapting the Bard.

Yet not everything in the state of Denmark was rotten. After a clichéd voiceover, Ophelia’s (Daisy Ridley) story follows her from a humble childhood to living among royalty as a lady-in-waiting to Hamlet’s troubled queen mum, Gertrude (Naomi Watts). These early scenes set up a more promising movie: the setting looks to have a painterly quality, the flowing gowns are a vivid contrast to plain castle rock of their home and the supporting cast is wonderfully diverse. It’s a shame that our Ophelia gets into trouble because of the rich white family in power.   Read more…

Ruth Bader Ginsburg finally shares what she thinks of Kate McKinnon’s SNL impersonations

TwitterFacebook

Ruth Bader Ginsburg isn’t one to ignore a good meme or joke, especially if it’s about her.

The Supreme Court justice revealed her thoughts about the “Notorious RGB” memes long ago. But now, while in conversation with NPR’s Nina Totenberg at Sundance Film Festival to promote her documentary RGB, Ginsburg shared a few thoughts on Kate McKinnon’s hilarious SNL impersonations and much more.

According to Variety, Ginsburg admitted to referencing McKinnon’s bits while at work. “I would like to say ‘Ginsburged’ sometimes to my colleagues,” she said, before offering praise to the SNL cast member. “I liked the actress who portrayed me.” Read more…

Peter Dinklage is ready for ‘Game of Thrones’ to be over

TwitterFacebook

Peter Dinklage is out in Utah to rep his new movie I Think We’re Alone Now at the annual Sundance Film Festival and — of course — he’s fielding questions about Game of Thrones.

HBO’s hit series is set to conclude with its eighth season in 2019, Dinklage seems like he’s ready to bid farewell to Tyrion Lannister in an interview with Variety.

“It’s time,” he said. “Storywise, not just for all our lives. It’s the perfect time to end it. Sometimes shows stay on a little too long, the jumping-the-shark thing.”

Dinklage admits there are “bittersweet” feelings in saying goodbye to a cast and crew he’s come to know over the course of eight seasons. But the “not just for all our lives” comment is telling of the show’s success, and the fame that’s followed each of its stars over the years. Read more…
