Android predictive text keeps suggesting ‘sit on my face,’ and Google is fixing it

TwitterFacebook

Google has promised to stop its Android phones from suggesting “my face” when its users text “sit on.”

Cory Doctorow came close to a disaster when he texted his kids’ babysitter, “Hey! Are you free to sit” and Android’s predictive text came up with “on my face.”

“Needless to say, I have never entered that string into my Android device,” he insisted in his tweet.

I was SMSing our babysitter with the default Android SMS app; I typed “Hey! Are you free to sit” and autocomplete came up with “on my face.” Needless to say, I have never entered that string into my Android device. (This is not a joke)

People are texting Stephen Miller, the guy responsible for separating families at the border

TwitterFacebook

Enraged and concerned citizens are now texting one of the men that’s largely responsible for tearing families apart at the U.S. border.

Separating children from their parents at the border has led to disturbing conditions at detainment facilities — the sound of children screaming as they were taken from their parents and reports of teenagers required to change toddlers’ diapers are prompting outcry all over social media.

Trump’s senior policy advisor Stephen Miller has reportedly been one of the main driving forces behind the decision to enforce the inhumane policy. But Miller told the New York Times that “it was a simple decision” to make, and that “no one is exempt from immigration law.”  Read more…

Walmart’s new text service bypasses app, website to order stuff online

TwitterFacebook

Walmart is trying out outsmart e-retailer Amazon with a new text-to-order service, Jetblack

Launching first in New York City, the service cooked up in Walmart’s tech incubator, Store No. 8, is aimed at “time-strapped” families that are too busy to browse for birthday presents, cleaning supplies, or toiletries online. Forget about physically going to a store — no way. Just text what you need.

Instead of searching for products on a mobile app or on a website, Jetblack is more of a text conversation — with a computer. You can text thoughts, ideas, musings, and the “personalized shopper” will come back with recommendations and reviews. You can even send over a picture and the Jetblack assistant will look for it. You can also text straightforward orders for when you know what you want. Read more…

Trying to swear on an iPhone is no different than trying to swear in ‘The Good Place’

Swearing is impossible on NBC’s The Good Place, but it’s also impossible in this regular place we call Earth if you are a person with autocorrect on your phone.
If you haven’t watched the show, here’s the deal: The Good Place (or whatever part of the…

Girl texts a wrong number and receives compliments from a big family of strangers

TwitterFacebook

Sometimes one reply can brighten up someone’s day… even if it’s from a complete stranger.

Sydney (@syuselton) needed an opinion on a dress, and she sent an accidental text to the wrong number. Instead of being ignored or corrected, she received the sweetest response from one big family.

Her friend kindly tweeted the moment for all to see and it had all of Twitter melting at the interaction.

New meme tells you what kids these days are REALLY texting about

TwitterFacebook

Kids these days, what are they like? With their YouTubing and their bit-pennies. Luckily the internet is here to explain.

Internet users have been constructing handy guides to acronyms like LOL and ROFL for baffled parents. The only problem, is they’re pretty specific…

Is your child texting about @olivegarden? Here’s a quick guide to find out:
OG: Olive Garden
LMAO: love me an olive
LOL: lots of lasagna
ROFL: ravioli or flavorful linguine
BRB: breadsticks rock, bro
WTF: where’s the fettuccine
STFU: some tiramisu for us

Has texting killed romance?

TwitterFacebook

It’s taken a quarter century, but texting has finally killed romance dead.

Yesterday marked 25 years since the first text message was sent, and in that time it’s changed so much about the way we date. It’s made us more available, more casual, and infinitely more #sextable.

It’s not that romance was perfect before texting came along. It was agonizing in its own way to have to call someone on a — *gasp* — landline. And perhaps even more dramatic was the scene where you parked yourself next to the phone, hesitating even to get up to go the bathroom, lest you miss that all-important call from your crush.  Read more…
