Marvel had a huge villain problem. Then Phase 3 happened.

TwitterFacebook

There is no point in a hero without a villain.

Captain America is just a guy in a suit if he’s not championing the ideals of truth, honor, and freedom against someone who believes the opposite. Spider-Man needs to do more than web up muggers — he needs to take down the head honcho whose greed is causing all of the crime.

A good villain can make a hero more heroic by comparison. A bad one can feel like a total waste of a hero’s time.

Until Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most of their villains felt like wastes of time.

Tessa Thompson’s ‘Thor: Ragnorok’ wig had an astronomical price tag

TwitterFacebook

Tessa Thompson is a national treasure worth her weight in gold.

And that’s basically what her Thor: Ragnorok wig cost, according to a new Huffington Post interview with her Sorry to Bother You director Boots Riley.

The shoot for the surreal indie comedy co-starring Thompson apparently conflicted with Marvel’s reshoots for Ragnorok. But the two characters couldn’t have had more different hair styles, with Valkyrie rocking a pragmatic yet elegant flowing ponytail, and Detroit slaying with short, colorful ringlets. Read more…

This hidden ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Easter egg in ‘God of War’ is awesome

TwitterFacebook

The Avengers: Infinity War Easter eggs just keep coming, and this one is by far the best. Because it lets you actually wield Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet and — spoiler alert — it’s rad as hell.

The twist here though is that we have Sony Santa Monica to thank for it, not Marvel.

The semi-rebooted God of War on PS4 finds a gaming icon, Kratos, very far from home. While the original trilogy from 2005 set him in the Greek pantheon, he’s now caught up in battles with the Norse gods.

The comparisons to Marvel were inevitable, since the popular comics and movies seared their version of Norse gods like Thor and Loki into our collective contemporary consciousness. Also God of War also released on April 20, only a week before Avengers: Infinity War. Read more…

Where all the characters left off before ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

TwitterFacebook

As Marvel is all too happy to explain, Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of 18 movies across 10 years.

What they don’t discuss as much is what you’re supposed to do if you haven’t seen them all. Or if you have, but don’t really remember where they left off. 18 movies is a lot! And not all of us had time to pore over each one scene by scene over the past decade!

Well – not all of you, maybe. We have, in fact, spent the past 10 years paying way too much attention to these films, and we’re more than happy to catch you up.

Here’s where every major character left off, going into Avengers: Infinity WarRead more…

There’s a big ‘Infinity War’ clue hiding in this new Thor photo

The end of Thor: Ragnarok left our mightiest hero down a planet, an eye, and a hammer — but judging by a new batch of Avengers photos, two of those things might be more replaceable than we thought.

In October, Marvel reportedly brought 83 of its big screen heroes together for a photo shoot to commemorate 10 years of the studio’s game-changing Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Vanity Fair was on hand to snap an exclusive portfolio with 32 of them for the magazine’s latest cover story.

Chris Hemsworth posts touching tribute to the true victim of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

TwitterFacebook

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details for Thor: Ragnarok.

There were plenty of casualties in Thor: Ragnarok (sure, a whole planet exploded, but we’re mostly still pissed about the deaths of the Warriors Three), but of all the losses our mighty hero suffered in his latest MCU outing, none was more painful than the destruction of his beloved hammer, Mjolnir.

Cate Blanchett’s badass credentials are well-documented, but as Hela — the antlered villainess who spends two hours chewing up every scene she’s in — she lays the smackdown on Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) within 60 seconds of meeting them, smashing Thor’s near-indestructible hammer like a puff pastry and banishing our favorite bantering brothers to a trash planet so that she can conquer Asgard unimpeded.  Read more…

8 ways actual Ragnarok is much scarier than ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

TwitterFacebook

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok.

Ragnarok, the Doom of the Gods. For the Norse it meant the end of days, for us it’s a fun new addition to the Marvel cinematic universe.

Let’s get one thing straight right away, this article is in no way a criticism of Thor: Ragnarok. It’s a fantastic movie about aliens, not the gods of original Norse mythology — if there even is such a thing as “original” mythology. It’s just interesting to see how these stories have filtered all the way down from Dark Ages Scandinavia to Hollywood in 2017. Read more…

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ made a surprising choice with some beloved characters

TwitterFacebook

Spoiler alert: This post contains plot details for Thor: Ragnarok.

Thor: Ragnarok may be the best-reviewed Marvel movie of all time, but fans do have one major complaint.

//Honestly I’m like super salty that they just casually killed The Warriors Three and that Lady Sif just wasn’t even in the movie??????

— Thor (@GoldThunderGod) November 4, 2017

The third installment in the thunder god’s franchise purposefully takes a hammer to a lot of the established rules of its titular hero’s universe — Jane Foster and her other earthbound friends are nowhere to be seen, Mjolnir is shattered, and ultimately, Asgard is destroyed — but there’s one big change that seems particularly jarring, at least for fans of Mighty Thor’s comic book origins.  Read more…
