James Gunn is back as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ director

TwitterFacebook

In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. He has been rehired to direct the third movie after he was fired in July last year.

The move was apparently decided on months ago. Disney Studios president Alan Horn was persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation and decided to reverse course to reinstate him, according to Deadline. Mashable has confirmed the report.

Gunn also confirmed the news on Twitter with an emotional statement.

This ‘Infinity War’ tune was the throwback jam of 2018

TwitterFacebook

2018 was a year that cried out for a simple, effervescent throwback tune we could use to forget our present troubles. No one could have guessed we’d find it in a movie that was all about the successful eradication of 50 percent of humanity

But that’s exactly what happened this May when Avengers: Infinity War topped the movie charts, and sent a 42-year-old track bouncing up the music charts in its wake. With Infinity War newly available on Netflix as of last week, we’re just a-movin’ and a-groovin’ to it all over again.

The track, of course, is “Rubberband Man” by the Detroit Spinners (full name, please, lest you confuse them with a contemporary British folk group). It’s in the movie for less than 30 seconds, but leaves a hell of an impression — partly because its 1970s bass-twanging  intro perfectly announces the Guardians of the Galaxy, but mostly because Chris Pratt so utterly throws himself into TikTok-like lip syncing.  Read more…

Marvel had a huge villain problem. Then Phase 3 happened.

TwitterFacebook

There is no point in a hero without a villain.

Captain America is just a guy in a suit if he’s not championing the ideals of truth, honor, and freedom against someone who believes the opposite. Spider-Man needs to do more than web up muggers — he needs to take down the head honcho whose greed is causing all of the crime.

A good villain can make a hero more heroic by comparison. A bad one can feel like a total waste of a hero’s time.

Until Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most of their villains felt like wastes of time.

Dave Bautista might not return to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

TwitterFacebook

The ousting of James Gunn from the third Guardians of the Galaxy film has left Dave Bautista incensed.

In an interview on Saturday, the Hollywood star — who plays Drax — told The Jonathan Ross Show that his future in the third film of the franchise is in doubt.

“It’s a bittersweet conversation. No, it’s a bitter-bitter conversation, because I’m not really happy with what they’ve done with James Gunn,” he said.

“They’re putting the movie off. It’s on hold indefinitely. And to be honest with you, I don’t know if I want to work for Disney.” Read more…

Kurt Russell defending ‘Guardians’ director James Gunn is a bigger deal than it seems

TwitterFacebook

Kurt Russell stepped up to defend James Gunn on Saturday night.

He didn’t go as far as saying “Disney must re-hire James,” but it’s clear that he feels Gunn was fired in error. Disney severed its business relationship with the Guardians of the Galaxy director in July after fringe alt-right interests resurfaced Gunn’s old and admittedly controversial tweets from a decade ago.

Tweets, it should be mentioned, that Gunn himself owned and apologized for a number of years ago.

“It’s sad. But it’s a part of our fabric now and I get it,” Russell told Variety on Saturday. “But I do think we’re getting a little too sensitive on maybe some of the wrong people.” Read more…

Entire ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ cast writes open letter protesting Disney’s firing of James Gunn

TwitterFacebook

“We fully support James Gunn.”

Those five words are the first you read in an open letter to Disney, a letter signed by every starring cast member in Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, and Michael Rooker, plus Gunn’s brother, Sean.

The cast is united in their belief that Disney made a huge mistake in firing Gunn, and they’re now letting the whole world know about it.

“Each of us looks forward to working with our friend James again in the future,” the letter reads. “His story isn’t over — not by a long shot.” Read more…

James Gunn fired as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’ director following resurfaced old tweets

TwitterFacebook

Guardians of the Galaxy franchise director James Gunn has been fired in light of tweets from his past, THR reported Friday afternoon.

“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Though the statement does not specify the contents of Gunn’s tweets, other users have screenshots that may point in the right direction:

James Gunn and Mark Hamill finally had the epic coffee date we’ve all been waiting for

TwitterFacebook

It’s the moment fans of Star Wars and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been waiting for for centuries. Er, well, months. But it’s felt like centuries.

It all started back in February when a fan asked director James Gunn if he could find a role for Star Wars legend Mark Hamill in the third volume of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

@JamesGunn, could you do me a huge favour and find a role for @HamillHimself in Guardians 3? The awesomeness of it might end me, but I’m willing to risk it. Thanks 🙂👍

— Ian Fee (@IanFee) February 25, 2018

Gunn replied that it should be easy to get together because Hamill was actually his neighbor in Malibu.  Read more…

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director says a big Easter egg still hasn’t been found

TwitterFacebook

If you think you know everything there is to know about Guardians of the Galaxy, you’re wrong.

According to director James Gunn, there’s still a “big Easter egg” in both films which hasn’t been spotted — and there are a whole bunch of smaller Easter eggs that are still unfound in volume two.

Gunn mentioned these as part of a Guardians FAQ Twitter thread he started on Wednesday.

Guardians Incredibly Frequently Asked Questions –
-Kraglin’s fin at the end of Vol 2 is a different fin than Yondu’s.
-Yes, I pick all the songs for the movies.
-The Guardians can travel light years in space, OF COURSE they can figure out how to power a Walkman/Zune w/o batteries
