Trump calls for 6G cellular technology, because why the heck not?

We’ve been covering the battle for 5G between the U.S. and China for some time. The White House has made 5G technology a national security priority, and industry leaders have followed up that charge with additional investment in the fledgling technology. What 5G exactly is though remains mostly a mystery. Is it new bandwidth? Edge […]

Qualcomm launches its next-gen 5G modem and mmWave antenna

There can be little doubt that 5G is going to take center stage at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. After years of hype without any real products, this is finally going to be the year that 5G — and especially 5G phones — will become available. 5G phones obviously need 5G modems, so […]

UK cybersecurity center isn’t too afraid of Huawei, report says

TwitterFacebook

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre has assessed the dangers of using Huawei’s 5G equipment, and it found that it’s not such a big deal, Financial Times reported Sunday.

The cybersecurity centre’s findings have not yet been made public, but FT claims that it found “ways to limit the risks” from using Huawei’s equipment in 5G networks.

The report doesn’t offer any further details, and an official review from the UK government — which will likely be strongly influenced by the NCSC’s findings — is expected in March or April. But if the UK government okays the use of Huawei’s 5G equipment in the country, it would be a blow to U.Sefforts to convince its allies to avoid doing so. Read more…

What to expect from Mobile World Congress 2019

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: 2019 just might be the year that smartphones get fun again. After years of similar form factors and slight upgrades, the mobile industry’s back is against the wall. For the first time ever, sales are down, owning to economic factors and slower upgrade cycles. Most people […]

Sprint calls AT&T’s 5G E label ‘false advertising’ in new lawsuit

While it’s true that it’s going to take some time before most of us will actually be able to enjoy the benefits of 5G, that doesn’t mean you can’t sit back and enjoy the fireworks right now. AT&T’s adoption of the “5G Evolution” label has already been controversial among industry followers and fellow carriers alike, […]

Huawei teases foldable phone in new invite

TwitterFacebook

Huawei’s foldable phone is coming in about three weeks.

This is according to a new teaser for a company event on Feb 24, ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

The image and the tweet don’t reveal much, but the image clearly shows a foldable device of some sort. Given previous indications that Huawei plans to launch a foldable phone (though the plan to launch before Samsung likely won’t materialize), the hint is clear enough.

5G changes how we work, play, and collaborate

TwitterFacebook

The age of 5G has arrived, and we’re just beginning to see the true potential of 5G revolutionizing how we communicate, collaborate, work, play — essentially how we live in the digital age. With unheard of download speeds and extremely low latency, this next generation of wireless technology is purpose-built to make download lags, streaming glitches, and the dreaded mid-meeting face freeze relics of the past.

In the first article in this series, we turned to experts at Qualcomm Technologies — the inventor of foundational technologies for 5G — to explain these new capabilities and why they’re so exciting. Now it’s time to geek out about some amazing experiences that 5G experts envision, and to speculate on the exciting future scenarios that we’ll owe to 5G.    Read more…

Mobile World Congress, which kicks off on Feb. 25 in Barcelona this year, will be hot. Besides foldable phones and hole-punch cameras, another trend we’ll see at this year’s event will be 5G.

And we’re not just talking about tests and promises of crazy-fast internet speeds sometime in the future — we’ll actually see several new 5G phones at the show.

Today, two major smartphone manufacturers, LG and Huawei, announced they would be launching 5G devices at the show.
