Steven Spielberg on why we’re so obsessed with the ’80s

If anyone’s more obsessed than you with the ’80s, it’s Steven Spielberg.

The legendary director of new Easter egg-filled geek adventure Ready Player One reflected on why we’re so obsessed with nostalgia for the decade in a Q&A at the film’s Australian premiere in Sydney on Tuesday. 

And he should know — Spielberg directed, wrote or produced Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, E.T., Poltergeist, The Goonies and more in the 1980s. 

Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 science fiction novel, Ready Player One is set in a dystopian 2045 and follows the adventures of a teenager in an escapist VR game. Read more…

‘Stranger Things’ Steve was not warned about how tight ’80s jeans were

Having hair that just won’t quit isn’t all he had to put up with.

Joe Keery (a.k.a. Steve from Stranger Things) appeared as a guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers and talked about how he prepared for the role. 

Not only did Keery get into shape because he was told the character of Steve was a swimmer — only to have that detail cut — but he also didn’t care for the ’80s fashion he had to sport. Specifically the tight jeans. 

“You’re having to duck and you’re running around,” he explains, “but you’re trapped.”

It was the 1980s – you kinda had to be there. But thanks to a deep reservoir of references and Easter eggs in the second season of Stranger Things, it’s almost like you were.

Since its first season, Netflix’s spooky series has taken a healthy dose of John Carpenter-style horror (channeling the atmospheric, synth-scored vibes of films like The Thing, The Fog and Starman), added a hearty dollop of Spielbergian, suburban kid adventure (notably E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, Poltergeist and The Goonies) and blended it all with the era’s key pop cultural touchstones in gaming, music and fashion.
