Patreon might destroy itself while trying to figure out how to pay artists online

TwitterFacebook

Internet strangers and supporters pay $1,080 a month to Stuart Schuffman, better known as his online persona Broke-Ass Stuart, to write things like “8 Ways to Get High for Hannukah.”

Yet, somehow, he’s not thrilled with it.

“The system we’ve set up is broken,” Schuffman said.

Schuffman is one of thousands of other creative people that use Patreon, a donation platform that has surged in popularity in recent years. Think Kickstarter but with a focus on the people behind the projects and tailored to providing a sustained monthly income rather than a one-off influx of cash.

TwitterFacebook

Facebook has managed to grow, outpace, and marginalize its competitors thanks to its huge user base, massive data collection operation, and the breakneck speed at which the Facebook engineering teams execute. We’ve seen Facebook steamroll several social networks over the years.

Now, Facebook is taking video more seriously than ever with its new product Watch, and I predict it will ultimately overtake YouTube as the biggest video players.  Read more…

YouTube is launching its own take Stories with a new video format called ‘Reels’

Even YouTube is adding Stories. The popular format introduced by Snapchat, then adopted by Instagram, Skype, Facebook, Messenger and even some dating apps, is now making its way to YouTube as a new feature the company is calling “Reels.” To be clear, Reels is YouTube’s spin on Stories, not an exact copy. And Reels won’t live at the top of the app, as Stories do on… Read More

An app where teenagers lip synch reportedly got bought for $1 billion

TwitterFacebook

$1 billion. That was the price tag for what’s cool, according to Justin Timberlake Sean Parker’s conversation with Facebook cofounder Mark Zuckerberg.

Apparently, it’s still true.

Musical.ly just sold to Beijing Bytedance Technology, the companies announced Friday. The price tag was between $800 million to $1 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported. If you haven’t heard of Musical.ly, you may be old — or perhaps you just forgot about it.

After launching three years ago, the smartphone app quickly became a viral sensation. The concept was simple: Create 15-second music videos. Tweens and teens became obsessed with lip-syncing to their favorite songs. By 2016, it had attracted 100 million users. It even launched some new social media stars like Jacob Sartorius.  Read more…
