YouTube demonetizes Momo videos

TwitterFacebook

For some YouTube creators, the scariest thing about the spooky internet “suicide challenge” hoax, Momo, is that they can no longer make money off it.

As Momo Challenge hysteria sweeps the nation, YouTube has started to demonetize all videos about the creature, including newscasts, explainers, and educational videos debunking the online urban legend.

According to The Verge, YouTube has confirmed that the company is demonetizing videos about Momo as they violate its advertiser-friendly guidelines

It should be noted that YouTube’s decision to demonetize videos about Momo is not technically a new policy. The company has routinely removed monetization capabilities from videos surrounding “harmful content,” which seems to be its view of anything involving the Momo character. Read more…

Creators in the U.S. are earning more than ever on internet platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Tumblr — nearly $7 billion, according to a new study.

The sprawling 97-page report by the Re:Create Coalition analyzes how many people in the U.S. are creating online content, where in the country they’re located, and how much they are earning. According to the study, nearly 17 million Americans earned an estimated $6.8 billion across nine internet platforms in 2017.

The Re:Create Coalition, a group which advocates for fair use and balanced copyright law, conducted the research in order to update its previous findings from 2016 on what it calls “America’s New Creative Economy.” The most recent report found a nearly $1 billion increase in earnings and more than 2.4 million additional creators over the one-year period between studies.  Read more…

Amanda McLoughlin just quit her day job — to play Dungeons and Dragons.

Well, sort of. McLoughlin is a co-host of a podcast that encourages D&D enthusiasts, and, in her words, re-creates the experience of playing with your friends. McLoughlin is also a podcast consultant, teaching others how to grow and actually make money from the niche and personal podcasting world.

McLoughlin can speak as an authority on podcasting for a living because she gets her paychecks from both consulting and her own podcast revenue. Central to that success is Patreon. Read more…

Reddit partners with Patreon to offer up a special flair, put a focus on creator communities

TwitterFacebook

Attention redditors and patrons, Reddit and Patreon are partnering up.

Reddit, the #5 most visited website in the U.S., and Patreon, a growing membership platform for creators, have just announced a partnership that will “offer creators and fans a better way to connect.”

The announced partnership between the two companies, for now, looks fairly simple. The two platforms will integrate in order to offer creators’ Patreon subscribers with a “special Patreon flair” within that specific creators’ Reddit community. Essentially, people monetarily supporting a content creator via Patreon will receive a little visual badge next to their Reddit username as a sort of bragging rights over the non-paying fans who are part of that creator’s Reddit group. YouTube ads are about to get a little less skippable

TwitterFacebook

You might soon be seeing less of that “skip ad” button over on YouTube.

In a video titled Want to earn more money from ad revenue?, posted on the platform’s official Creator Insider channel, YouTube announced a big change for its YouTube Partners.

Any channel that can monetize its videos will soon be able to implement non-skippable ads. Previously, as mentioned in the video, only select YouTube channels were able to run non-skippable ads.
