‘Game of Thrones’ is not a misogynistic show, female stars say ahead of final season

TwitterFacebook

Game of Thrones has been accused time and time again of being a fundamentally misogynistic show, careless in its depictions of violence, sexual assault and abuse of female characters.

One scene in particular – when Sansa Stark was brutally raped by her sadistic husband Ramsey Bolton in Season 5 – had viewers everywhere saying that the show had finally gone too far.

Rape scenes like that are not acceptable, not even in shows set in an – albeit fictional – medieval patriarchal society, critics said

But now, four of the show’s top female stars say that the show was actually always on the female characters’ sideIn a joint interview with Vogue, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, and Lena Heady addressed the criticisms (Gwendoline Christie aka Lady Brienne also took part in the interview, but did not address this topic). Pretty soon we’re all going to have to face it: Game of Thrones is ending.

“Every day is like a step closer to it not being a part of my life anymore,” Williams said. “But all good things must come to an end.”

Speaking about whether or not the ending will satisfy fans of the show, Williams remarks aren’t exactly as reassuring as we would have hoped for.  Read more…

Maisie Williams just gave us the Stark reunion we didn’t know we needed

The last time Arya Stark saw her older brother Robb on Game of Thrones, it was a pretty horrendous scene. You might recall Robb’s headless body was being marched through the streets with the head of his direwolf Grey Wind attached to a mocking chant …

Maisie Williams shares the moment she knew just how big ‘Game of Thrones’ actually was

Game of Thrones is a record breaking, successful show, in terms of viewership and certainly in terms of budget. But the show’s popularity wasn’t always that obvious — not even to the cast.

Game of Thrones actor Maisie Williams just shared an interview with the podcast The Disruptive Entrepreneur, that it wasn’t until the third season of the show she realised just how huge Game of Thrones actually was.

The specific moment that made the success of Game of Thrones dawn on her was when she was attending the Season Three premiere in 2013 when she was 15 years old.  Read more…

The scene Maisie Williams wasn’t even allowed to watch in ‘Game of Thrones’

Game of Thrones stars — they’re just like us! Especially when it comes to being mortified at having to watch those graphic sex scenes with their parents.

Maisie Williams gave an interview to The Australian recently and described just how weird it was to work around the nearly NC-17 levels of raciness when she first joined the show at 14-year-old.

Her family did their best to protect her underage eyes, especially with one particular scene in Season 1:

Williams went on to say that, “Most of the gory stuff I was part of, and it’s not scary when you’re there shooting it. No one’s really getting their face ripped off. So it’s quite exciting really.” Read more…

Maisie Williams almost missed her ‘Game of Thrones’ audition to go to a pig farm

TwitterFacebook

Arya Stark was more interested in archery than dresses, and the actress who played her was more interested in going to a pig farm than auditioning for the role. Maisie Williams revealed that she almost skipped her audition for the field trip, and just hearing this gives us anxiety. Imagine anyone else playing Arya Stark?!

Williams dropped this casually during an interview with InStyle in which she opens up about her teen years and the colossal life change of being cast in Thrones. Season 1 aired right after the actress turned 14 and she grew up in front of an international audience – she’s now 21 and filming the eighth and final season. Read more…
