Hostless Oscars kick off with a performance by Queen

TwitterFacebook

It’s a strange year for our friend Oscar, marooned without a host, and instead of opting for a replacement, the telecast kicked off in a whole new manner.

The Oscars opened with a performance by Queen (with Adam Lambert, who has toured with the band for years), whose songs and story defined Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody.

The audience of A-listers sang along enthusiastically, because even a room full of people who probably voted for vastly different Oscar movies can all stan Queen.

Okay one second in and the oscars are already lit.

YouTube now offers free, ad-supported streaming Hollywood movies

TwitterFacebook

YouTube has just rolled out dozens of free-to-watch full-length feature films on its platform. The only catch is that the content is ad-supported.

First noticed by AdAge, YouTube began launching ad-supported Hollywood films under a “Free to watch” section on its Movies & Shows vertical. Films like Legally Blonde, The Terminator, Rocky, Hackers, and All Dogs Go to Heaven are listed on the page with a “Free with Ads” tag displayed under the title. Users can watch these films at no cost with commercial interruptions and pop-up banner ads like the ones displayed on other YouTube videos.

(The ads appear to go away for YouTube Premium subscribers, based on our testing so far.) Read more…

West Hollywood City Council votes to remove Trump’s Walk of Fame star

TwitterFacebook

Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been pickaxed (twice!), covered in stickers, surrounded by a wall, spray-painted with a swastika, and defended by fake Russian guards. It’s even inspired a popular meme. And now the West Hollywood City Council wants it removed altogether.

The proposal was approved on Monday night by the council, citing Trump’s “disturbing treatment of women and other actions,” and was announced by West Hollywood Mayor John Duran on Twitter.
