How a lifelong Gerard Way fan managed to interview him without vomiting

TwitterFacebook

They say to never meet your heroes, but I did it anyway.

I’ve put Gerard Way — former My Chemical Romance frontman, current comic book writer — on a pedestal for about 13 years. He seemed a genius, an impossibly aloof icon.

But in real life? He’s just a nice dude who is mildly insane and makes weird, good sh*t.

I saw that the second we started talking about our home state, New Jersey. Suddenly it dawns on me: he’s that kid who lived down the block and that everyone thought was a little off because he listened to weird ambient noise while he made comics.  Read more…

‘Justice League’ proves the world is big enough for two versions of The Flash

TwitterFacebook

When Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment made the somewhat controversial choice to keep their superhero movies and TV shows separate — ruling out any crossovers between their big and small screen projects — they were clearly differentiating themselves from Marvel’s interconnected “Cinematic Universe.”

(Never mind that, while ostensibly all taking place in the same continuity, the heroes from Marvel’s TV shows have yet to play any meaningful role, or even merit a namedrop, in Marvel’s movies — that’s a gripe for another day.)

Instead, DC views its properties as a “multiverse,” in which two versions of Superman can coexist peacefully because each story takes place in an alternate dimension: Tyler Hoechlin embodies the Man of Steel on The CW’s Supergirl, while Henry Cavill dons those iconic tights on a parallel earth — a narrative shortcut that comic book publishers have used for years to excuse the conflicting continuities and characterizations of their heroes across their various titles.  Read more…

Long-awaited sequel to ‘Watchmen’ has humor, heart

TwitterFacebook

Warning: this post contains spoilers for the first issue of Doomsday Clock

There seems to be two kinds of comics — gritty, dark, and serious on the one hand, lighthearted and funny on the other. Somehow, the first installment of Doomsday Clock does the impossible: it manages to be both.

That’s appropriate, because this comic is attempting to do the impossible in another way, too. Writer Geoff Johns (who also happens to be the President and CCO of DC Entertainment) is trying to close the divide between the regular DC Universe of Superman, Batman et al, and the world of Alan Moore’s 1986 standalone classic Watchmen — in which Superman is named as a fictional character in a comic book.  Read more…

People were all too happy to show respect for THEIR ‘Justice League’ on Twitter

TwitterFacebook

Justice League is far from the hit that Warner Bros. and DC were expecting. It has effectively failed at the box office on opening weekend and critics don’t seem to be too fond of it either.

People have even signed a petition hoping to get an exclusive and more cohesive cut of Zach Snyder’s version of the film released.

At this point, it is safe to say the movie has been an underwhelming flop. So, of course fans created a meme to help them cope with this lackluster Justice League film.  Read more…

Jason Momoa has no time for the ‘Justice League’ haters

TwitterFacebook

Whether you loved or hated Justice League, it’s clear that no one involved in the project was more pumped to be there than Jason Momoa, who obviously had a whale of a time (yes, that was a sea pun) playing Jason Momoa Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, the team’s resident surfer bro and reluctant King of Atlantis.

Momoa clearly approached the role with all the joie de vivre he brings to his day-to-day existence — which, judging by his social media, is often spent throwing axes, drinking Guinness and hanging out with his beautiful friends — so he’s pretty “bummed” that the internet (and box office receipts) started raining on his parade by pointing out that the movie is ..not great. ‘Justice League’ looks ugly and rushed, but I liked it anyway

Justice League Justice League, the DC cinematic universe’s answer to The Avengers, is finally here. It comes at the end of a terrific year for superhero movies. Logan was genuinely great, while Wonder Woman‘s success should have demolished any lingering Hollywood skepticism about action movies directed by and starring women. Plus, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok were pretty… Read More

Rotten Tomatoes is hiding its ‘Justice League’ score, but we’ve done the math

TwitterFacebook

Critics are in on Justice League, but Rotten Tomatoes won’t be revealing its official score until Thursday, just after the stroke of midnight. Someone finally thought to use the Tomatometer to drive eyeballs to a live streaming event, and so here we are.

But we’ve seen enough reviews by now to call it: This film will wind up rotten.

Of the 39 reviews we found online by early Wednesday morning, 22 leaned rotten, while 17 leaned fresh (and many of those just barely). That makes our early, highly unofficial aggregated score 44% fresh – well shy of the 60% mark needed for that coveted red sticker. Read more…

One of Marvel’s greatest talents is moving to DC

TwitterFacebook

Brian Michael Bendis has been working with Marvel for the better part of 20 years. He built its well-regarded “Ultimates” universe; his roster of characters includes Jessica Jones and Miles Morales (the latest Spider-Man.)

And now Bendis just shocked the comics world by signing an exclusive deal with Marvel’s mortal enemy, DC Comics.

DC announced the deal on Twitter. The company described Bendis’ contract as as “multi-year” and “multi-faceted,” but did not specify what titles he’ll be working on.
