Captain Marvel’s shallow take on feminism doesn’t land

TwitterFacebook

This post contains spoilers for Captain Marvel

In the pinnacle moment of Captain Marvel’s final fight sequence, Gwen Stefani’s “I’m Just a Girl” starts playing as Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers kicks everyone’s ass.

The subtext, in case you missed it, is that Carol Danvers might just be a girl. But being just a girl is pretty kick ass.

This moment — and every other one when Marvel seems to suddenly remember that Captain Marvel is its first movie with a solo female lead ever  — summons the same feelings of a modern Dove commercial. It’s a cloying sensation, the off-putting suspicion that your own crushing sense of disempowerment is being exploited to sell you soap.  Read more…

‘Venom’ just passed ‘Wonder Woman’ at the global box office

TwitterFacebook

As if to prove there’s no justice in the real world, Venom is on track to overpower two previous superhero box office titans — and possibly become one of the most profitable movies of its ilk.

After reaching $822 million in total global earnings over the weekend, Venom has eclipsed both Wonder Woman‘s $821 million and Spider-Man‘s $821 million.

This might be cause for confusion and concern among superhero movie fans, since Venom received quite, uh, “mixed reviews” from critics and audiences alike.

Yet it’s still projected to become one of the most profitable big budget superhero movies yet after accounting for both its production budget and its gross earnings, according to Forbes. Read more…

Steve Trevor is coming back for ‘Wonder Woman 2’ and we’re not screaming, you’re screaming. (We’re screaming.)

If you saw Wonder Woman in 2017, you may recall one key detail about Steve Trevor: HE DIED. Or so we thought?? In a devastating sequence during the final battle, Steve bid Diana goodbye, gave her his family heirloom, and flew straight to his death.

OR SO WE THOUGHT. Read more…

DC’s Geoff Johns drops big hint about ‘Wonder Woman 2’

TwitterFacebook

DC’s Geoff Johns may have dropped a serious hint about the Wonder Woman sequel – namely, the year it takes place.

Johns, DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer, shared a teaser on Facebook Friday morning that simply read “WW84,” which might point to seeing our hero in 1984.

Johns uploaded the image as his cover photo, where it slid largely under the radar until The Hollywood Reporter sniffed it out. Presumably, the teaser means Wonder Woman 2 will jump ahead to 1984.

We knew the sequel would move forward in time, leaving 1917 (and Steve Trevor) in the dust, but having an exact year narrows this down immensely. By 1984, Diana could run into a young Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent – or almost anyone else in the DCEU, hero or villain. She could also wear a lot of pastels. Read more…

Wonder Woman Lynda Carter speaks out about her #MeToo stories

TwitterFacebook

It isn’t surprising that Lynda Carter says she was sexually abused while playing Wonder Woman in the iconic ’70s TV show. But it does perfectly capture the sickening hypocrisy of Hollywood, which has played lip service to women’s empowerment for decades — all while systematically exploiting and ensuring their oppression.

In a Daily Beast interview, Carter discussed the personal experiences that have led her to become such an outspoken supporter of the #MeToo movement, which spotlights women chronicling stories of sexual misconduct on social media. A longtime feminist and activist, Carter was the symbol for female power of her time — even as she endured the industry’s rampant sexual abuse and harassment. Read more…
