Watch the exact moment the whole UK erupts in World Cup jubilation at England’s win

TwitterFacebook

You might not know this, but apparently it’s coming home. The World Cup, that is.

After a decidedly tense match, which had the entire nation teetering on the edge of its seat, England knocked Columbia out of the World Cup.

First of all, England has a terrible track record with penalties at the World Cup — they’ve never won any of their previous penalty shootouts in the competition. So, when it finally happened this time around, people were chuffed (to say the absolute least).

And, right on cue: the whole country erupted into a chorus of jubilation.  Read more…

Football matches land on your table thanks to augmented reality

It’s World Cup season, so that means that even articles about machine learning have to have a football angle. Today’s concession to the beautiful game is a system that takes 2D videos of matches and recreates them in 3D so you can watch them on your coffee table (assuming you have some kind of augmented reality setup, which you almost certainly don’t). It’s not as good as being there, but it might be better than watching it on TV.

World Cup opening game proved a little tricky for people with colour blindness

TwitterFacebook

Did you have a little trouble distinguishing between teams at the World Cup opener? You weren’t alone.

During the opening game between Saudi Arabia and host country Russia on Thursday, people watching who have colour blindness complained on Twitter they had trouble identifying which team they were cheering for.

Why? The teams wore red (Russia) and green (Saudi Arabia), two of the colours people with a type of colour vision deficiency (CVD) are unable to distinguish between.

More than a few people were upset.

Bees invade soccer match, causing players to hit the ground

TwitterFacebook

Pitch invasions are usually unwelcome in sport, and especially if the invaders can sting you.

That’s what happened to players of Liga de Portoviejo and Manta FC of Ecuador’s second division on Saturday, when bees descended 26 minutes into the game at Reales Tamarindos Stadium.

Players and officials hit the ground in near unison, leaving them on the deck for half a minute as they waited for the flying insects to pass.

Marvel Stadium. It’s a thing.

TwitterFacebook

It’s not just people naming their kids after Marvel characters. Australia’s about to have an entire sports venue named for the brand.

Currently named Etihad Stadium, the Docklands venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, will be rebranded and renamed as Marvel Stadium starting on Sept. 1.

It’s a new eight-year partnership between Disney and Melbourne Stadiums Limited, and will see a Marvel retail store built within the venue, as well as “other activations” involving Marvel characters.

Sure, it’s pretty much just a renaming at this point, not a Grandmasters Arena-themed overhaul a la Thor: Ragnarok, but seeing as Chris Hemsworth is a major fan of one of the home team, the Australian Football League’s Western Bulldogs, we’re keeping everything crossed for some fun stunts. A chance alignment at a soccer match gave us the hero we deserve

Stamford Bridge is the last place you’d expect to find a superhero, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

During the Chelsea vs. Huddersfield match on Wednesday, someone noticed a masked hero in the stands. Well, sort of.

NFL star has last laugh on Twitter after once being hated on after Draft

TwitterFacebook

It’s hard to believe it now, but Houston Texans fans once hated on J.J. Watt.

That was all the way back after the 2011 NFL Draft, when the player was selected by the Texans as its 11th overall pick.

The now-beloved NFL star, one of Time‘s 100 most influential people of 2018, hasn’t forgotten the bad times. In a caption-less tweet on Thursday, coinciding with this year’s NFL Draft, he reminded everyone about the hate he received online at the time.

Watt also retweeted a video of fans booing him in 2011, right after he was picked by the Texans in the NFL Draft. Read more…
