Amy Poehler blasts NRA after they tweeted a ‘Parks & Rec’ GIF
The NRA has turned being tone-deaf into an art form, and now they’ve gone and incurred the wrath of Amy Poehler and some fellow Parks & Rec alums.
On Wednesday night, the NRA sent a tweet that featured a gif of Poehler’s Leslie Knope character. The tweet thanked their controversial spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who appeared on a CNN town hall event Wednesday night alongside students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of last week’s deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida that claimed the lives of 17 people.

This is what collective mobilization looks like.
High school students across the country walked out of school on Wednesday to protest inaction from politicians on gun control policy. The protests are a direct response to the deadly high school shooting in Parkland, Florida last week that took 17 lives.
A striking way to see the spread of this movement — from both a macro, and micro perspective — has emerged on Snap Maps.
By mid-Wednesday afternoon, Snapchat’s map surfaced multiple featured and trending stories of walk outs from California to Texas, Florida to D.C., and more states and schools across the country. Read more…

After the Parkland shooting, the gun control debate isn’t fading away

Donald Trump asks Mar-a-Lago guests what he should do about guns
In the wake of the most recent mass shooting, President Donald Trump sought advice on gun control from a trusted source: rich people staying at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.
According to the Washington Post, Trump spent the weekend at his resort watching cable news, complaining about the Russia investigation, and asking “Mar-a-Lago Club members about whether he ought to champion gun control measures in the wake of last week’s school massacre in nearby Parkland.”

When you move to America from a country with more effective gun control laws, one of the first things you learn is how hard it is to talk to Americans — on either side of the political divide — about the gun issue.
It was particularly difficult when I arrived on these shores in 1996, direct from living in Scotland during its (and Britain’s) worst-ever school shooting. In the tiny town of Dunblane, a 43-year old former shopkeeper and scoutmaster brought four handguns to a school gymnasium full of five-year-olds. He shot and killed 16 of them and their teacher, then turned his handgun on himself. Read more…

In the gut-wrenching days following a mass shooting, people often attempt to cope with the tragedy by sharing their feelings online.
After the deadly shooting this week in Parkland, Florida — as well as recent shootings in Orlando, Las Vegas, Nevada, and beyond — discouraged people have expressed their outrage, grief, and anti-gun beliefs on social media in an effort to have their voices heard. It’s understandable, a way to vent when we all feel so helpless. But, of course,Twitter outrage only goes so far.
While sharing words online has the potential to ignite important discussions, there’s so much more we can do — and, added plus, these offline efforts will have you feeling better than when you end up engaging with a Twitter troll. Read more…
