HBO’s Twitter account just burned Jack Dorsey

TwitterFacebook

Nothing brings out a perfectly workshopped diss like a little cross-industry promotional opportunism.

We were reminded of this fact on Jan. 10, when, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the show The Sopranos, the HBO Twitter account announced it would dish out Sopranos-inspired nicknames. And you better believe that Twitter CEO and “conversational health” guru Jack Dorsey wanted in on the fun.

“In honor of the 20th anniversary of The Sopranos, I’m handing out Soprano nicknames today,” read the tweet from HBO’s main account. “Who wants one? FYI if you tell me your first name, this is way easier for me.” Read more…

Twitter’s newest feature is reigniting the ‘iPhone vs Android’ war

Twitter’s newest feature is reigniting the flame war between iOS and Android owners. The U.S. social media company’s latest addition is a subtle piece of information that shows the client that each tweet is sent from. In doing so, the company now displays whether a user tweets from the web or mobile and, if they are on […]

Jack Dorsey and Twitter ignored opportunity to meet with civic group on Myanmar issues

Responding to criticism from his recent trip to Myanmar, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said he’s keen to learn about the country’s racial tension and human rights atrocities, but it has emerged that both he and Twitter’s public policy team ignored an opportunity to connect with a key civic group in the country. A loose group […]

Jack non-apologizes for his tone deaf Myanmar vacation tweets

TwitterFacebook

Add Jack Dorsey’s name to the running list of white men who have issued non-apologies in 2018.

On December 8, the Twitter CEO shared reflections on his recent meditation retreat to Myanmar, a country whose army is killing and raping Rohingya Muslims “with genocidal intent.”

Some criticized the blind-eyed and tone deaf seeming thread in the days that followed. Now, Dorsey has issued what he called “more color” on his trip to Myanmar “given the resulting conversation.”

I’m aware of the human rights atrocities and suffering in Myanmar. I don’t view visiting, practicing, or talking with the people, as endorsement. I didn’t intend to diminish by not raising the issue, but could have acknowledged that I don’t know enough and need to learn more.

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey gets roasted for his ignorant tweets about Myanmar

TwitterFacebook

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey shared with the world what he did on his most recent birthday: travel to Myanmar and do a 10-day silent meditation.

Dorsey made a thread on Twitter explaining the experience, and hundreds of people chimed in to remind Jack of the genocide happening in Myanmar that’s been perpetuated by social media, how funny it is that he paid money to get bit by mosquitos, and his general rich white guy privilege.

For my birthday this year, I did a 10-day silent vipassana meditation, this time in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar 🇲🇲. We went into silence on the night of my birthday, the 19th. Here’s what I know 👇🏼

Twitter’s U.S. midterms hub is a hot mess

Today, Jack Dorsey tweeted a link to his company’s latest gesture toward ongoing political relevance, a U.S. midterms news center collecting “the latest news and top commentary” on the country’s extraordinarily consequential upcoming election. If curated and filtered properly, that could be useful! Imagine. Unfortunately, rife with fake news, the tool is just another of […]

Twitter is reportedly removing the ‘like’ button and people do not like it

TwitterFacebook

Twitter is about to remove the red, heart-shaped ‘like’ function from its platform, reports suggest.

According to the Telegraph, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey said at a Twitter event last week that he would get rid of the like function “soon.” Per the Telegraph, Dorsey said he “was not a fan of the heart-shaped button.”

In March 2018, Twitter introduced a bookmarking function, which allows users to privately save tweets without hitting the like button – which not only implies a positive attitude towards the content of the tweet, but is also public. Read more…

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey doesn’t use a computer or a tablet, apparently

TwitterFacebook

You think you really need that shiny new MacBook Pro? Well, if Jack Dorsey can run Twitter and Square — both multi-billion-dollar companies — without a computer, laptop or a tablet, then you probably don’t need one, either.

So how was this incredible fact discovered? Well, Dorsey’s tweets do typically seem like they’re all posted from a mobile phone. So Quartz reporter Dave Gershgorn straight up asked Dorsey whether he uses a computer or a laptop, to which Dorsey simply replied “no.”

No

— jack (@jack) October 10, 2018

Later in the thread, Dorsey was asked whether he at least uses a tablet, but the answer was, again, negative.  Read more…

Thousands of Twitter accounts that spread fake news during the 2016 election are still active today, say researchers

Fake news and misinformation was a key tactic used by the Russians during the 2016 presidential election to try to sway voters against candidates and sow mistruths and mistrust. Now, with just weeks before the 2018 midterm elections, researchers say things are almost as bad. Research out Thursday by the Knight Foundation found that more […]
