How to tell if you’re a ‘Lawnmower Parent’ and what to do about it

TwitterFacebook

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

Helicopter Parents have reigned supreme in the media these last few years but they’re being replaced by a hyper-concentrated version of themselves with a new moniker: Lawnmower Parents. If you’ve never heard of lawnmower parents, take a seat now because you’re about to have some strong feelings.

Lawnmowers don’t just hover over their kids to make sure that they are safe, they obliterate any whiff of a struggle for their kids by curating every aspect of their childhoods. These parents tend to do extreme things, such as choose their child’s friends, practice “redshirting” to ensure their child’s early academic ease and success, and even jump into arguments on their child’s behalf to prevent their kid from having hurt feelings.  Read more…

Nintendo’s new program to get Labo into classrooms is a total no-brainer

TwitterFacebook

Nintendo Labo feels like a slam dunk for educators. And now, thanks to a partnership with the non-profit Institute of Play, it’s actually going to happen.

Labo, for anyone who might not know, is a nifty Nintendo Switch product. It’s not so much a game as it is a building platform, with users following instructions as they fold included sheets of cardboard and combine them with string and plastic hardware (bolts, grommets, and the like).

Different kits yield different creations. The Variety Pack, for example, comes with the pieces needed to build a fishing pole game controller, a vehicle steering controller, a rudimentary piano, and a remote-controlled car. Once an item is built, you can then slot in Switch Joy-Con controllers — which are packed with a gyroscope and an infrared sensor — to make it interact with the Labo software. Read more…

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

If the problems of parenting have got you down, you might seek comfort in knowing the animal kingdom has very similar problems, and you are in good company in the most expansive sense.

As the first father in this country to receive paternity leave more than 45 years ago, my book, The Fun Book of Fatherhood, is a call-to-action to establish gender equality in the workplace and the home, encourage a national discussion on the subject of the family, pass national paid family leave legislation, and be ever mindful of what I call “fast family forward.” But it’s also a fun primer on parenting, using the animal kingdom as a learning tool. Let’s be honest, there are worse places to turn to for advice.   Read more…

7th grade boy nails his extra credit question by telling the best joke

TwitterFacebook

Want to hear a joke? Of course! Who doesn’t?

Today’s source of laughter is brought to you by Evelyn Lizette, a middle school teacher who recently shared a joke from one of her seventh graders to Twitter.

When grading papers, Lizette stumbled upon a standout response to an extra credit opportunity. She gave students the chance to tell a joke to earn an extra point on their math assignment, and one boy simply wrote, “Our president.”

Hero barely saves little kid from slamming into a door

TwitterFacebook

A man operating an automatic door has made the greatest save of the century.

At the beginning of the video, a little girl trips as she’s entering the building, and is about to hit a locked door in front of her — face first.

Thankfully, the man at the front desk managed to hit the button that opens the door just in time. The little girl still falls, but through the doorway instead of hitting her face.

Definitely take a look at this entire scene and be amazed at how quickly this guy slams that button. We need more people like this man in this world.
