Let’s bring back the super weird 1990 Rock the Vote campaign

TwitterFacebook

We’re just a month away from the midterm elections, so…where’s Megadeth when you need them?

By now, you’re probably familiar with Rock the Vote, a voter mobilization nonprofit started by Virgin Records executive in John Ayeroff in 1990. The campaign blew up when it partnered with MTV in advance of the 1990 midterm elections.

The nonprofit is as active as ever. Still, it’s the 1990 campaign – featuring LA Gear, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Megadeth, and freaking Deee-Lite – that we need today.

In 1988, less than 40 percent of eligible 18-24 year olds votedAccording to the Pew Research Center, just 20 percent of voters aged 18-24 vote in midterm elections nowadays. That’s a marked decrease from 1964, where just over 50 percent of eligible voters in that demographic did.  Read more…

Madonna’s self-indulgent tribute to Aretha Franklin gets criticised by fans

TwitterFacebook

The death of Aretha Franklin still continues to inspire tributes from across the world, and the MTV VMAs are no different.

At the ceremony on Monday, Madonna gave a tribute to the Queen of Soul. But fans have complained the speech was more about herself, rather than Franklin.

Madonna launched into a long-winded anecdote about the start of her career before presenting the Video of the Year award — Camila Cabello won, in case you’re wondering.

“Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life. I left Detroit when I was 18, $35 in my pocket,” she said.  Read more…

Lindsay Lohan’s MTV reality show teaser looks weirdly like a self-produced beauty vlog

TwitterFacebook

Everyone’s favorite Parent Trap twin is a long way from Napa. Lindsay Lohan’s new MTV series Lohan Beach Club (working title) is taking the actress turned nightclub mogul to Mykonos, Greece.

The show’s exceptionally short first preview features Lohan proclaiming, “Pack your bags, MTV. We’re going to Mykonos!”—as well as a few lingering shots of (what appears to be) her newest nightclub location.

Few details about the series have been revealed, but MTV exec Nina Diaz promised viewers “a behind the scenes look at how a young, successful entrepreneur runs her empire.”

Lohan and longtime friend Tiffany Trump (yes, of the presidential Trumps) hung out in Mykonos late last week, but images of the two palling around have since been deleted. This could mean official series screen time for Tiffany, but only time will tell. Read more…

MTV debuted its ‘Jersey Shore’ spinoff, and fans were like “Gym, Tan, HELL NO”

TwitterFacebook

Try as hard as MTV might, there is only one Jersey Shore.

The infamous reality show, which ran from 2009 to 2012, followed a group of strangers who live together in a house in New Jersey’s Seaside Heights. Over the years, Jersey Shore captured the hearts of boardwalk lovers, delivered heavy doses of drama, and turned “GTL” (gym, tan, laundry) into a life motto.

It was so popular, in fact, that MTV recently tried to replicate the phenomenon by creating Floribama Shorea followup series starring eight young adults spending the summer together in Florida’s Panama City Beach.

Kesha performs powerful anthem on a rainbow, becomes engulfed in glitter

TwitterFacebook

Pop singer Kesha smashed out another powerful performance at the 2017 MTV EMAs on Sunday, bringing cathartic single “Learn to Let Go” to the stage with glitter and rainbows aplenty.

Hitting London’s SSE Arena Wembley, the highly underestimated singer performed the self-healing anthem from her latest album, Rainbow. A simulated rainbow engulfs Kesha and her dancers, before a bona fide glitter storm erupts.

The single, released in July, comes from her first album since the sexual abuse claims and legal ordeal with Sony producer Dr. Luke.

“As much as our past creates who we are, we can’t let it define us or hold us back. And especially if you’ve been through something hard, and we all have, you can’t hold on to resentment because it’s like a poison,” Kesha wrote of the song in HuffPost. Read more…
