Snapchat’s users are surprisingly old and it’s telling them to vote

Snapchat is a college favorite more than high school phenomenon. Only 20 percent of Snapchat’s US users are under 18, down from 22 percent in 2016 as some of its early adopters have now aged up and headed to college. Appealing to older users was a big motive for its otherwise-disastrous redesign that do a […]

Snapchat shares hit all-time low as search acquisition Vurb’s CEO bails

Snapchat’s sagging share price is making it tough to retain talent. Bobby Lo, founder and CEO of mobile search app Vurb that Snap Inc acquired for $114.5 million two years ago is leaving day-to-day operations at the company. That means Lo cut out early on his four-year retention package vesting schedule, which was likely influenced […]

Snapchat adds new styles as Spectacles V2s get used 40% more than V1

Snapchat isn’t revealing sales numbers of version 2 of its Spectacles camera sunglasses, but at least they’re not getting left in a drawer as much as the V1s. The company tells me V2 owners are capturing 40 percent more Snaps than people with V1s. And today, Snapchat is launching two new black-rimmed hipster styles of […]

Snapchat’s hated redesign made it lose users for the first time ever

TwitterFacebook

Snapchat’s massively unpopular redesign continues to hurt the company.

Snap disclosed Tuesday that the app lost 3 million of its daily active users due in large part to its controversial redesign.

The decline, which marked Snapchat’s first-ever quarter of negative user growth, was reported during Snap’s second quarter earnings call.

“We feel that we have now addressed the biggest frustrations we’ve heard and are eager to make more progress on the tremendous opportunity we now have to show more of the right content to the right people,” CEO Evan Spiegel said of the company’s subsequent attempts to walk back some of the more unpopular aspects of Snapchat’s redesign. Snapchat Lenses can now be controlled with just your voice

TwitterFacebook

Snapchat is giving “no hands” a new meaning by introducing Lenses that a user controls with his or her voice.

We’ve seen Bitmoji lenses, enhanced iPhone X ones, and some that react to sound. This is the first time that a specific word can control a Lens in the app.

Yes, you’ll be able to say “Look Ma, No Hands” and have an effect on screen — although that is not a code word at launch. In a similar fashion to ‘Hey Siri,’ ‘Alexa,’ or ‘OK Google,’ only certain words work.
