Barack Obama tweets inspiring thread to celebrate International Women’s Day

TwitterFacebook

International Women’s Day is here, and to mark the annual celebration of women around the world, Barack Obama tweeted an inspiring thread.

“On International Women’s Day, I’m reflecting on the future we all want for our daughters: one where they can live out their aspirations without limits,” the former president tweeted before most people had their morning coffee.

Obama went on to say that he’d be celebrating today by highlighting “some of the women who are building that future for all of us today,” and started a thread to highlight three women in particular.

On International Women’s Day, I’m reflecting on the future we all want for our daughters: one where they can live out their aspirations without limits. And I’m celebrating some of the women who are building that future for all of us today.

This campaign wants UK politicians to wake up to the dangers of the gender data gap

TwitterFacebook

The real-world ramifications of the gender data gap are all around, us all the time.

From the size of the phone currently in your palm, to the temperature of the office you’re sitting in, to the way your car has been built, to the way the medicine you take has been made.

A new book by feminist campaigner and author Caroline Criado Perez has uncovered the dangers of not collecting data about women, and the fact that data bias is putting women’s lives at risk.

A new GoFundMe campaign led by writer and activist Tracy King aims to send a copy of the book — Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men — to every MP in the country in the hope that lawmakers will take action about this important issue.  Read more…

We aren’t collecting data about women and it’s literally putting their lives at risk

TwitterFacebook

Night after night at the stroke of midnight, the street lights in my hometown would switch off, plunging everything into darkness. I lived in this town for three years during my twenties — three years of having a self-imposed curfew because of local authority cuts.

During those years, I had to make like Cinderella and get home before 12. Not because my car would turn into a pumpkin, but because I was terrified I’d find myself outdoors in the pitch black night. Every plan I made had to factor in the impending darkness that would arrive like clockwork, bringing with it an immediate threat to my safety. Without setting out to do so, my local authority had failed me.  Read more…

This is why mindfulness isn’t working for you

TwitterFacebook

March Mindfulness is our new series that examines the explosive growth in mindfulness and meditation technology — culminating in Mashable’s groundbreaking meditation bracket contest. Because March shouldn’t be all madness.

In a culture obsessed with self-care, feeling like you’ve failed at the practice of mindfulness can breed unique feelings of frustration, resentment, and even shame.

It seems so simple: Quietly observing your thoughts, you remain open to and curious about the present moment without judging the ideas that ping back and forth in your consciousness. You expect to experience the benefits that research says mindfulness can offer, including reduced stress, increased attentional focus, less emotional volatility, and improved relationship satisfaction.  Read more…
