‘Black Panther’ box office crosses $1 billion worldwide

Black Panther has officially hit $1 billion worldwide after just four weeks in theaters.

According to a release from Disney, Black Panther is the third-biggest superhero movie domestically, behind The Dark Knight ($534.9 million, and Panther is already at $530.9 as of March 10) and The Avengers ($623.4 million).

With those numbers, Black Panther will easily outstrip The Dark Knight, most likely by the end of Saturday, and it’s pacing ahead of The AvengersPanther has roughly the same domestic gross going into its fourth weekend that Avengers did after its fourth weekendPanther also has the advantage of opening in February (Avengers and The Dark Knight were spring/summer releases) and enjoying months in theaters with little major competition. ‘Black Panther’ breaks into the all-time top 20 at the U.S. box office

The freight train of success that is Black Panther continues to barrel on, breaking into the top 20 of the U.S. box office and surpassing 2017’s Wonder Woman.

Black Panther reached $421.8 million at the North American box office Tuesday – beating out Wonder Woman ($412.6 million) and Toy Story 3 ($415 million) to take the no. 20 spot on the list of the U.S.’ highest-grossing films, Variety reported Wednesday. 

In addition to that impressive domestic showing, Black Panther has made an additional $326.3 million overseas, bringing the worldwide total so far to $748.1 million.

For the third year in a row, a Star Wars movie emerged as the highest-grossing release of the year in the U.S. – which meant that for the third year in a row, the biggest film in the country was one featuring a female protagonist. 

But Rey was just the beginning.

The second-biggest film of the year was Beauty and the Beast. The third? Wonder Woman. According to TheWrap, 2017 marks the first year since 1958 in which the three highest-grossing domestic titles all had female leads. ‘Wonder Woman’ takes the title of highest grossing superhero origin story

Move over, Spider-Man. And Batman and Superman and all superheroes with the operative descriptor of “man” – there’s a new sheriff in town and long may she reignWonder Woman is officially the highest grossing superhero origin movie ever made. Patty Jenkins’ summer smash hit has now earned a whopping $821,750 worldwide, shooting past the 2002 Spider-Man which earned  $821,709.

That said, Wonder Woman is the top superhero origin story. It’s still the fifth-highest superhero movie of all time, falling behind sequels and team up films like The Dark Knight or The Avengers.
