Where to stream every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’

But… what if you missed a few along the way?…

‘Dumbo’ is too gosh darn cute, and that’s (somehow) a complaint

TwitterFacebook

Dumbo‘s problem isn’t really that the animal is too cute. But that’s part of it.

For starters, it undermines the initial premise of the movie, which is that Dumbo would be ostracized by humans as a hideous freak instead of worshipped as the most adorable creature ever to exist. And at a circus, no less — a place people go specifically to see things that are weird in a fun way.

The larger issue, though, is that Dumbo’s adorableness floods the movie with sentiment that feels largely unearned.

It is impossible not to feel moved when Dumbo whimpers for his mother or snuggles up to his favorite humans. In the context of a movie that does little else to elicit genuine emotional response, however, it’s also difficult not to notice how calculated these moments feel.  Read more…

‘Rick and Morty’ co-creators’ bizarre VR game gets new trailer and release date

TwitterFacebook

The new trailer for Justin Roiland’s upcoming VR game is giving us some serious Interdimensional Cable vibes — but on acid.

Trover Saves the Universe is the Rick and Morty co-creator’s solo project from his newly launched Squanch Games studio. While the plot is hardly the point in this bizarre comedy, the press release mentions saving your dog (and the world) from some asshole named Gorkin.

Does anybody else smell a John Wick crossover?

The trailer also comes with the release date announcement, so you can expect Trover Saves the Universe to be out on May 31 for PS4 and PSVR, then June 4 for PC. Read more…

4 ways of understanding Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Major spoilers for Jordan Peele’s Us ahead.

After seeing Us, Jordan Peele’s follow up to Get Out, you immediately understand why Rorschach test imagery was used so prominently in its marketing.

Like the famous psychological ink blot test, Us is a movie that invites you to make your own meaning out of its evocative imagery and themes — acting like a reflection of your own thoughts. The short answer to the question, “What does Us mean?” is, essentially, “What does it mean to you?”

The longer answer is that it can mean a whole lot of different things to different people. And that’s where this article comes in. Although it’d be impossible to “explain” exactly what Us is trying to say — and although that ambiguity is one of its greatest accomplishments — we do have some theories about what it all means. Stephen Colbert calls the Mueller report conclusion ‘worse than the finale of ‘Lost”

TwitterFacebook

It was a lengthy, almost two-year wait for the Mueller report to be delivered, and Stephen Colbert thought it was, well, anticlimactic.

In a monologue opening The Late Show on Monday, Colbert said the report’s findings, which found that there was no proof of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, was “worse than the finale of Lost.”

“What about the smoke monster, was it real or not? And if not, why have so many members of Trump’s campaign plead guilty to lying about meeting with the smoke monster?” Colbert quipped.

“Why couldn’t this have been like the ending of Seinfeld? Still disappointing, but at least they’re all in jail.” Read more…

Yes, Kevin Smith saw Stan Lee’s ‘Captain Marvel’ cameo. He’s getting them back.

Kevin Smith was “a blubbering mess” after seeing Stan Lee’s cameo in Captain Marvel, and he’s planning quite the multi-levelled tribute in return.

Apple TV+ makes Facebook Watch look like a joke

Apple flexed its wallet today in a way Facebook has scared to do. Tech giants make money by the billions, not the millions, which should give them an easy way to break into premium video distribution: buy some must-see content. That’s the strategy I’ve been advocating for Facebook but that Apple actually took to heart. […]
