YouTube is making hashtags more visible — but it’s still missing the point

TwitterFacebook

YouTube has been quietly introducing new ways to discover videos over the last few months.

Now, the site is rolling out an update that shows hashtags from a video’s description above the video’s title

This small-but-rather-noticeable change is just the latest expansion of hashtags on YouTube since 2016. But so far, the company seems to be missing the point of hashtags entirely.

The company’s version of the hashtag fails to function in the same way that we have come to understand hashtags on every other social media website — and it’s a huge annoyance that disrupts the natural order of the internet. Read more…

Women are sharing their side profile selfies to show noses of all sizes are beautiful

TwitterFacebook

A woman is encouraging others to share selfies of their side profiles to embrace their big noses.

Freelance journalist Radhika Sanghani created the #SideProfileSelfie campaign in a bid to celebrate larger noses, which she feels lack representation in the entertainment and fashion industries.

Sanghani told Mashable that she hated her nose for years, but recently she’s begun to alter her “perceptions of beauty” and is growing to “love” her nose.

“It’s been so freeing to not hide from side profile photos anymore and to actually just like my face,” says Sanghani. “So what I really want is for women to share their own #sideprofileselfie and start to celebrate their noses.”  Read more…

What’s in a hashtag? A spark for our passions, in love and in war

TwitterFacebook

I found love in a hopeless place. Yeah, some would argue that a Twitter hashtag is something terrible. They can be manipulated by bots and trolls (#ReleaseTheMemo). They can be hijacked by angry users (#TellingItLikeItIs). They can be just all around strange (#KanyesAnalPlaylist).

The hashtag’s intended purpose — what Chris Messina pitched to Twitter in 2007 — was to bring people together. They do, my relationship being a case in point. I won’t bore you with all of the details, but TL;DR TechCrunch’s annual conference uses the hashtag #TCDisrupt and including those 10 characters in a tweet is how I met my friend turned significant other.  Read more…

Women share their teen photos to slam Roy Moore’s alleged sexual misconduct

TwitterFacebook

Since apparently believing women about sexual abuse that happened when they were young is just too much (and it’s easier for politicians to give a “safe” response that effectively protects abusers), Twitter users decided to clear things up with a powerful hashtag: #MeAt14.

Women shared photos of themselves at 14 in order to show that at that age, a person is still a child — and therefore incapable of giving sexual consent to a 32-year-old man … like Senate candidate Roy Moore, as allegations against the Alabama judge suggest.
