How to use tech to become an actual wizard like Harry Potter

Stop waiting for your letter

Fans of quills, letters, and playing sports with household items, there’s still hope. Wizards in Harry Potter don’t really use primitive muggle technology because, you know, they have magic. But that doesn’t mean you can’t become a wizard using muggle technology right?

Don’t fork out for a Kwikspell course. Here’s how to channel J.K. Rowling’s magic into your life, from illumination charms to working wands. As fellow British writer Arthur C. Clarke said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”  Read more…

This 15-year-old’s heartbreaking poem is so good even J.K. Rowling retweeted it

TwitterFacebook

You know you must be on to something when your writing gets tweeted by J.K. Rowling herself.

On Friday morning, teacher Kate Clanchy from Oxford, UK, shared a poem written by one of her students.

“The kids always write the best poems after they’ve stopped listening to me,” she wrote.

“For example, I usually tell them to avoid rhyming couplets because they govern the poem and tend to be comic — but this has heavy rhyme, and it’s heartbreaking.”

Here’s the full poem, written by 15-year-old Louis:

J.K. Rowling once used the world’s greatest excuse when she was late with book edits

TwitterFacebook

Everyone’s heard the old excuse about the dog eating the homework. This one’s way, way better, though.

It started when the official QI account shared this glorious fact about the Large Hadron Collider on Thursday:

In April 2016, the Large Hadron Collider was shut down after a weasel fell into it.

— Quite Interesting (@qikipedia) March 22, 2018

12 minutes later, J.K. Rowling responded with a story that was sort of similar. It was also quite possibly the greatest excuse anyone’s ever given for not handing a piece of work in on time. Read more…

J.K. Rowling had a heartwarming response to this struggling ‘Harry Potter’ fan

TwitterFacebook

When she’s not busy hammering trolls into the ground on Twitter, J.K. Rowling likes to take time to interact with her fans.

She’s previously comforted people on Mother’s Day and Christmas, and reached out directly to people who tweeted at her to ask for help and advice.

And on Monday, she did it again.

It started when a Harry Potter fan tweeted to thank Rowling for her books, which she said provided an escape from her depression.

Dragging myself through another bout of severe #depression and re-reading the #HarryPotter series to strengthen my Patronus. A million thanks to @jk_rowling for the magical escape that’s always there when it’s needed ❤

Here’s 1 emoji you definitely shouldn’t tweet at J.K. Rowling

TwitterFacebook

J.K. Rowling often goes after people on Twitter, but usually she reserves her magical takedowns for trolls or politicians.

Not today, though. This morning, the subject of her wrath was something entirely different: an emoji.

It started with this viral tweet about how the meaning of “lol” has changed over time.

does anyone remember when lol meant “laughing out loud” instead of “this is to indicate that this brief text isnt hostile”

— common sad girl (@sadgirlkms) February 19, 2018

Rowling then responded with this:

Remember when the 😂 emoji meant ‘lol’ not ‘I seek to convey my contempt by suggesting that your words and beliefs are laughable when actually my keyboard is cracked from all the rage typing and I can’t remember when I last smiled.’ https://t.co/mwKGcqgXtZ

J.K. Rowling has some crucial editing advice all writers need to listen to

TwitterFacebook

If you’re taking a short internet break from working on that novel, you could do a lot worse than spending some time on J.K. Rowling’s Twitter feed.

It’s a perfect reminder that, no matter how ridiculously successful you, you never stop worrying about the quality of your work.

On Monday, the Harry Potter author tweeted her thoughts on a particularly dreaded part of the writing process: the rereading.

When rereading last week’s work, the trick is to stop for a biscuit just before your blood sugar levels drop to ‘every single word of this is worthless.’

J.K. Rowling perfectly sums up Donald Trump’s cancelled UK visit in emoji form

TwitterFacebook

“I’m coming to the UK on a diplomatic visit… J.K.!”

J.K. Rowling — author of those books no-one’s ever heard of — had something to say about President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel his February visit to the UK

Turns that due to her being a master of succinct prose, Rowling does not require that newfangled 280-character limit to accurately convey her opinion on the president’s motives.

Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!
