Roll your eyes all you like, but Instagram poets are redefining the genre for millennials

TwitterFacebook

We millennials like our poetry typed out in neat fonts on rustic pastel backgrounds, centred in a tiny square on a small screen. We read short, simple, and relatable poems which may strike a chord with us for a second before we scroll on to the next Timothée Chalamet appreciation post or #brunch pic.

I’m talking, of course, about poetry native to Instagram. A budding genre scoffed by the literary community but loved by millions of young readers.

This Insta-friendly verse, with its distinct tone and aesthetic, is serving sincerity and feeling in the place we need it the most: the ever ironic, cynical internet. It’s this vulnerability on a platform that’s more-often-than-not replete with inauthenticity and polished veneers that makes it so striking.  Read more…

This Instagram poet is making young people feel less alone

TwitterFacebook

It’s a rare but wonderful thing when you see yourself on the pages of the book you’re reading. I found myself furiously nodding my head and scribbling in the margins as I tore through She Must Be Mad, a new poetry and prose collection by 22-year-old Insta-poet Charly Cox.

The book is divided into four (highly relatable) sections — namely: she must be in love; she must be mad; she must be fat; she must be an adult. Section by section, Cox grapples with her own personal battles, and in doing so, tackles the universal issues being faced millennials and Gen Z-ers. Things like mental illness, struggles with body image, dating in the world of apps, and coming of age in the era social media.  Read more…

This 15-year-old’s heartbreaking poem is so good even J.K. Rowling retweeted it

TwitterFacebook

You know you must be on to something when your writing gets tweeted by J.K. Rowling herself.

On Friday morning, teacher Kate Clanchy from Oxford, UK, shared a poem written by one of her students.

“The kids always write the best poems after they’ve stopped listening to me,” she wrote.

“For example, I usually tell them to avoid rhyming couplets because they govern the poem and tend to be comic — but this has heavy rhyme, and it’s heartbreaking.”

Here’s the full poem, written by 15-year-old Louis:

The International Space Station’s crew is having a very merry Christmas

TwitterFacebook

‘Twas Christmas Day and all over the place,
People were celebrating, even in space.
The halls were all decked, the stockings were hung,
And for all that we know, even carols were sung.

Two-forty miles up, above Santa’s sleigh,
Was the International Space Station’s own holiday.
Gifts came on a rocket that was launched up from Earth,
Bringing cosmonauts and astronauts plenty of mirth.

On that zero-g station with their hearts all a-flitter,
Astronaut Vande Hei shared this photo on Twitter.

Merry Christmas from the International Space Station! pic.twitter.com/F1ye4d7MXN

This old poem about plums has been turned into a hilariously nerdy meme

TwitterFacebook

Ever wondered what happens when you cross “Mambo Number 5” with William Carlos Williams’ poem about eating some plums? Of course you have!

Well, poetry nerds have gone and given “This Is Just To Say” the remix treatment, yielding a veritable harvest of memes all about those delicious, sweet, and cold plums.

In case you’d forgotten about the damn plums being stolen from the icebox because they were so irresistible, here’s a little reminder to jog your memory:

The internet has worked its magic to ensure this poem will never be forgotten—it’s now been fully crystallised in meme form for all eternity.  Read more…

Artist ‘fixes’ sexual misconduct apology statements, turning them into painfully honest poems

TwitterFacebook

A pattern has emerged with every new allegation of sexual misconduct. After the bombshell comes an “apology” letter — now the accused’s ubiquitous and perfunctory mechanism for responding.

Many have found the letters hollow, insincere, and insufficient. But one woman has altered the apology letters to give them new meaning.

Poet Isobel O’Hare is creating striking “erasure poems” out of the apologies, and posting them on her Instagram. She has created poems out of the apologies of Louis C.K., Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and more. Read more…
