‘House of Cards’ crew members claim widespread harassment from Kevin Spacey on set

TwitterFacebook

New sexual harassment allegations against Kevin Spacey have surfaced in a CNN report, with several House of Cards crew members claiming to have witnessed or been victims of the actor’s harassment on set of the Netflix series over the past few years.

Accusers who spoke to CNN under condition of anonymity included a former production assistant, a former camera assistant, a former female production assistant, and several other crew members — eight in total — who claimed that Spacey’s routinely predatory behavior created, according to the production assistant, “a toxic environment for young men who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background actors.” Read more…

What was the deal with Mike Wheeler in ‘Stranger Things 2’?

TwitterFacebook

In the grand tradition of sequels everywhere, Stranger Things 2 had more of everything – more demogorgons, more Will, more Steve being a good guy, more Hopper being Hotper (I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I knew as soon as I said it).

The one exception? Mike Wheeler.

In Season 1, Mike wasn’t just part of the gang – he was the guy, around whom much of the action revolved. He was the dungeon master and ringleader; he was Eleven’s closest friend and ally; he was brother of Nancy, another key character.

This season, though, Mike takes a significant step back. He’s still there, but his position in the story is much less prominent. He doesn’t even really get a plotline to call his own. He’s a supporting player in Will’s storyline and a distant motivating force in Eleven’s. Read more…

All the ’80s references you might’ve missed in ‘Stranger Things 2’

TwitterFacebook

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things 2.

It was the 1980s – you kinda had to be there. But thanks to a deep reservoir of references and Easter eggs in the second season of Stranger Things, it’s almost like you were.

Since its first season, Netflix’s spooky series has taken a healthy dose of John Carpenter-style horror (channeling the atmospheric, synth-scored vibes of films like The Thing, The Fog and Starman), added a hearty dollop of Spielbergian, suburban kid adventure (notably E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, Poltergeist and The Goonies) and blended it all with the era’s key pop cultural touchstones in gaming, music and fashion. The resulting ’80s flavor never overwhelms the main course of story and character, but makes the meal even tastier.  Read more…

The awful, tired, boring growing pains of ‘Stranger Things 2’

TwitterFacebook

The afterglow of binge watching Stranger Things 2 is very, very strong — believe us, we know.  Unless you’re a heartless, unfeeling demodog, you’re probably still feeling the warm fuzzies from Steve Harrington and Chief Hopper dadding all over our strange things.

But let’s put our feels to the side for a moment, and consider the ugly, upside down truth about Stranger Things 2: it’s a hot goddamn mess.

A fun mess, for sure! With some great standout moments! But nowhere near the tight, expertly paced storytelling of the first season. Largely, Season 2 can be summarized as basically “Stranger Things: The Strangening.” You tread the exact same ground as last season, only more. And again. And it’s just kind of… boring. Read more…
