New Zealand’s oil and gas industry is a sizeable part of the country’s economy, but it’ll be stopping all new offshore exploration to address climate change.
“There will be no further offshore oil and gas exploration permits granted,” Prime Minister …

Microsoft continues its steady pace of opening up new data centers and launching new regions for its Azure cloud. Today, the company announced the launch of two new regions in Australia. To deliver these new regions, Azure Australia Central and Central 2, Microsoft entered a strategic partnership with Canberra Data Centers and unsurprisingly, the regions […]

Facebook just lost another user — New Zealand’s privacy commissioner
Mark Zuckerberg’s friend count continues to tick down in the face of a major data misuse scandal griping the company. The latest individual to #DeleteFacebook is no less than the privacy commissioner of New Zealand. Writing in The Spinoff, John Edwards accuses Facebook of being non-compliant with the New Zealand Privacy Act — and urges other […]

Flying cars are more down to earth than ever – at least, in that their physical design is moving closer to something resembling a car. The AeroMobil 5th generation all-electric VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) concept is no exception, with styling that makes it look sort of like a near-future SUV or crossover, with a […]

Rocket launch startup Rocket Lab is moving from its initial testing phase into proper commercial operations with its next mission. The company’s past two launches, “It’s a Test” and “Still Testing” were (you guessed it) primarily tests of its Electron launch craft vehicle and launch process, but its next mission, dubbed “It’s Business Time” (kudos […]

Theft is never fun, but thankfully some people see some humour in it.
A New Zealand business called Smith Crane & Construction put up a Facebook post on Tuesday to find the people who stole their tools on Saturday morning — so they can offer them a job.

“We thought you might like to come and work for us? Maybe make an honest living instead of thieving off us?” reads the post.
It appears the owners are more impressed at the thieves’ ability to get out of bed on time, have a working knowledge of power tools, and have a truck to drive around, than annoyed by the theft. Read more…

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern certainly has been getting worldwide attention.
But an interview aired by the Australian version of 60 Minutes on Sunday has irked some people, who’ve labelled the piece by reporter Charles Wooley as “creepy” due to the focus on her looks and some pretty awkward comments about her pregnancy.
“I’ve met a lot of prime ministers in my time, but none too young and not so many so smart, and never one so attractive,” Wooley said in the feature.
A moment which became the source of significant ire was Wooley’s questioning about Ardern’s recently announced pregnancy, and the exact timing of conception, an analysis that appears to leave the couple uncomfortable. Read more…

It’s somewhat rare for New Zealand politicians to attract global attention, but Jacinda Ardern’s star continues to rise.
The current New Zealand Prime Minister is featured in the March issue of Vogue, where she’s been labelled the “anti-Trump,” admired for the way she speaks about poverty and homelessness with a “blend of Bernie Sanders’s bluntness and Elizabeth Warren’s fearlessness.”
But of course, being Vogue, there was plenty of attention dedicated to Ardern’s photoshoot. Clarke Gayford, Ardern’s partner, made the photo his wallpaper.

Rescuing animals seems like a rather thankless job at times.
Tell that to New Zealander Robert Tahau, who helped save a seagull that was lying by the side of the road with a broken wing, according to the New Zealand Herald.
Unfortunately for Tahau, the bird didn’t reciprocate the love, pecking Tahau in a video that he uploaded to Facebook. “She’s a vicious one,” he said in the video.
Tahau told the newspaper he planned to take the seagull to a vet or the SPCA, but both were closed. Unfortunately, it died in the meantime, and he gave the bird a proper burial.
Okay, not the happiest of endings — but a nice encounter, nonetheless. Read more…
