Space startup Rocket Lab successfully sent a rocket to orbit

TwitterFacebook

On Sunday afternoon, New Zealand and U.S. spaceflight startup Rocket Lab successfully sent a second Electron rocket to space — and this time it reached orbit.

The rocket “Still Testing” launched from the company’s New Zealand North Island site on the Māhia peninsula at 2:43 p.m. NZDT (1:30 a.m. GMT/8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday).

“Still Testing” reached orbit and deployed customer payloads after eight and a half minutes from take-off.

On-board were three small commercial satellites: Dove Pioneer, an earth imaging satellite from Planet Labs, and two for weather and ship tracking company Spire. Read more…

New Zealand’s prime minister is pregnant, and that’s a big deal for working mothers

TwitterFacebook

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is having a baby.

Ardern made the announcement via Twitter on Friday morning, writing that she and her partner Clarke Gayford will “join the many parents who wear two hats.”

“I’ll be PM & a mum while Clarke will be ‘first man of fishing’ & stay at home dad. There will be lots of questions (I can assure you we have a plan all ready to go!) but for now bring on 2018,” she added.

We thought 2017 was a big year! This year we’ll join the many parents who wear two hats. I’ll be PM & a mum while Clarke will be “first man of fishing” & stay at home dad. Creative people build mini-island to dodge NYE alcohol ban

TwitterFacebook

When it comes to New Year’s Eve, people are more than happy to get creative if it means their party plans can go unhindered.

On Sunday, a photo shared by David Saunders in the Facebook group Tairua ChitChat! began doing the rounds on social media.

It appears to show a group of New Zealanders sat drinking on a tiny island made of sand:

Aspiring poet’s rejection letter from 1928 is delightfully brutal

TwitterFacebook

No one likes being rejected, especially when you receive a letter that gives your work an absolute dressing down.

Penned by Australian publisher Angus & Robertson in 1928, the letter is addressed to Frederick Charles Meyer of Katoomba, who had sent a sample of his writing to the company.

The letter was sent by Kylie Parkinson to the Twitter page Letters of Note, who posted it on Tuesday. You’d rarely come across a letter as stern, albeit eloquent as this.

New Zealand’s most Instagrammed place should come as no surprise

TwitterFacebook

Pictures don’t quite do Milford Sound justice, but that’s not stopping people from trying.

The New Zealand landmark is the country’s most Instagrammed place in 2017, according to year-end geotagged data released by the company.

Widely referred to as the “eighth wonder of the world,” Milford Sound is a fjord located on New Zealand’s South Island.

With its towering mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls, it’s a breathtakingly beautiful destination — although, really, there’s nothing quite like actually being there.

New Zealand prime minister responds to Ed Sheeran’s citizenship request with a mini-quiz

Amazon’s Alexa and Echo to finally launch in Australia and New Zealand

TwitterFacebook

It’s not just Amazon itself that is yet to truly launch in Australia.

The company’s Alexa-powered Echo devices are not currently available in Australia or New Zealand, either. But they’re on their way, launching in both countries “early next year.”

On Thursday, Amazon announced the coming of its hands-free Echo device, activated by smart voice assistant Alexa, to both countries in 2018.

Developers will be able to build localised voice experiences and embed uniquely Australian and New Zealand knowledge within Alexa with the expansion of the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) — a collection of self-service APIs — and the Alexa Voice Service (AVS). Read more…
