17-year-old Chloe Kim is the hangry Olympic champion we need right now

TwitterFacebook

America, meet your new Olympic hero.

Chloe Kim is only 17 years old. On Tuesday morning, she landed two 1080s in the women’s snowboard halfpipe to win her first Olympic gold medal.

Even more impressive? She was hella hangry while she did it. Here’s what she tweeted right before her final run:

Wish I finished my breakfast sandwich but my stubborn self decided not to and now I’m getting hangry

— Chloe Kim (@chloekimsnow) February 13, 2018

Damn, we can all relate. Except the part where she won a gold medal. This isn’t her only food-related tweet, either. Behold, her churro wisdom: Read more…

Queen of chill Chloe Kim tweets about ice cream in the middle of Winter Olympics halfpipe qualifier

TwitterFacebook

Extremely chill Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim crushed the qualifier for the halfpipe on Monday, beating out the second-place finisher by over seven points.

Is the time between Olympic qualifying runs stressful? It was stressful for me to watch, so I assume yes. But did Chloe Kim still tweet about ice cream during this high-pressure time? Absolutely.

Keep in mind that it is… very cold in Pyeongchang.

Could be down for some ice cream rn

— Chloe Kim (@chloekimsnow) February 12, 2018

yes…

— Chloe Kim (@chloekimsnow) February 12, 2018

Should Chloe Kim actually bring some ice cream to the competition next round, you will be the first to know. Until then, please temper your Olympics anxiety by channeling Chloe’s nerves of steel.  Read more…

American skater Mirai Nagasu just landed the triple axel nailed by Tonya Harding

TwitterFacebook

If you’ve seen I, Tonya, you’ll know how important this moment is.

Figure skater Mirai Nagasu just became the first U.S. woman to land a triple axel in the Winter Olympics.

Nagasu was competing in the free skating portion of the Figure Skating Team Event on day three of the Winter Olympics at Gangneung Ice Arena, Pyeongchang on Feb. 12. And she did this:

Watching Team Canada erupt into applause when American skater Mirai Nagasu became only the third woman to land a triple axel at the #Olympics almost made me tear uppic.twitter.com/VKBg7Tnmkh

You have to hear this bluff about why the Dutch are good at speed skating

It’s no secret the Dutch are quite good at speed skating.
Athletes from the Netherlands have already claimed two gold medals at the Winter Olympics. In fact, all three medals in the ladies’ 3,000 metre event went to Dutch competitors, and you can bet…

Snowboarder recovers from horrific accident to win Olympic medal

TwitterFacebook

In March 2017, Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris laid in a hospital bed with fractured ribs, a fractured left arm, pelvis, and jaw, along with a ruptured spleen and collapsed left lung.

On Saturday, less than a year after he slammed into a tree while backcountry snowboarding, McMorris claimed an Olympic bronze medal in the men’s slopestyle event.

“I’m trying not to think too much about the past today,” he said to reporters after his improbable victory. “A lot of times I need to pinch myself. There have been some low times, but these high times make it worthwhile.”  Read more…

Olympic organizers hit with hack during opening ceremony

TwitterFacebook

International unity be damned.

The 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony was an opportunity for athletes around the world to proudly wave their nation’s flag and welcome the start of a time-honored tradition of peaceful competition. Oh, and it was also a chance for another highly skilled subset of the planet’s population to strut their stuff — specifically, hackers.

According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap News, servers belonging to Olympic organizers were hacked during this year’s Feb. 9 opening ceremony. As a result, the TVs at the main press center are said to have malfunctioned.  Read more…

Ranking every sport in the Winter Olympics, even the ridiculous ones

TwitterFacebook

The Winter Olympic Games are here and that can only mean one thing: time to come out of your hygge cave, don your most patriotic gear to root on your country (while simultaneously ignoring the quiet specter of rising nationalism), and watch the finest specimens of athletically trained human compete in physical activity on a global stage for honor and glory.

A general theme of all the winter sports — whether it’s bobsleigh, ski jumping, speed skating, or even luge — is “how do I use ice to turn my body into a speeding, vulnerable projectile,” and for that reason alone, we have to say up front: all of these sports are incredibly difficult, require tremendous skill, “it’s an honor just to just be nominated,” yaddah, yaddah, yaddah.  Read more…
