What Frances McDormand meant by an ‘inclusion rider’ at the Oscars

TwitterFacebook

In Frances McDormand’s impassioned Oscars acceptance speech for Best Actress, she plead with film industry heavyweights in the room to pay attention to the women around them — whose stories need telling and financing.

“Don’t talk to us at the parties tonight, invite us into your office or we’ll come to yours; whatever suits you best. We’ll tell you all about them,” the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star said.

Yet there were two words at the conclusion of her speech which puzzled much of the room and the public alike: “Inclusion rider.” So, what is it? Read more…

Chloe Kim is ‘shook’ by Frances McDormand’s Oscars shoutout

TwitterFacebook

Famously hangry U.S. snowboarder Chloe Kim is reeling after a shoutout from Frances McDormand at this year’s Oscars.

The 17-year-old gold medallist was singled out by the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star during her Best Actress acceptance speech.

“I think is what Chloe Kim must have felt like after doing back-to-back 1080s in the Olympic half-pipe,” said McDormand, accepting her Academy Award.

At the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Kim landed two 1080s in the women’s snowboard halfpipe to win her first Olympic gold medal on Feb. 13. Read more…

The best and worst moments of the 2018 Oscars

TwitterFacebook

They may have gone on for several sunlit days, but the 2018 Oscars had their distinct highs and lows like any year. As usual, we could cut some bloated bits, but we also found celebrity pairings and breakout stars that gave us life to last through the long night.

Here are the best and worst moments from the 90th Academy Awards.

Frances McDormand wins Oscar for best actress, honors all women in film in ultra-powerful moment

TwitterFacebook

“If I fall over pick me up, because I’ve got some things to say,” Frances McDormand began in her acceptance speech for Best Actress at the Oscars.

It’s been a simultaneously traumatic and empowering year for women in film. And McDormand didn’t shy away from addressing the current climate in Hollywood — both in her prescient performance, and on the night of her big win itself.

She put down her coveted trophy for “perspective,” she said, opening up her arms to the audience and asking, “If I may be so honored: Can I have all the female nominees stand up with me?”  Read more…

Emma Stone shouted out Greta Gerwig while presenting for Best Director

TwitterFacebook

Greta Gerwig didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Director during Sunday night’s Academy Awards. That honor went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water

But before opening the envelope, presenter Emma Stone gave Gerwig a shoutout for her role as the sole woman nominated in the directing category.

“These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year,” she said.

While some praised the line, as many have noted on Twitter, Stone’s choice to draw a line between the category’s male nominees and Gerwig ignores that two of the men nominated – Jordan Peele and Del Toro – are also people of color.  Read more…

The best gag at the Oscars was definitely the jet ski

TwitterFacebook

And the award (and jet ski) for the shortest speech at the Oscars goes to… The costume designer from Phantom Thread!

Mark Bridges won an Oscar for Costume Design at the Academy Awards Sunday night and gave a speech that came in at just 36 seconds, earning him a jet ski and a free stay at the Days Inn in beautiful Lake Havasu in Arizona.

In his opening monologue, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel tempted nominees to keep their speeches short by promising to give them a jet ski, which legendary actress Helen Mirren showed off in perfect fashion.

Jordan Peele wins Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars and everyone’s thrilled

TwitterFacebook

Jordan Peele just became an Oscar winner.

The Academy has awarded Peele this year’s Best Original Screenplay prize for Get Out. He’s the fourth African-American writer ever nominated in the category, and the first one ever to win.

Needless to say, people are pretty psyched about it.

Not everyone’s impressed with Twitter’s Oscars commercial

TwitterFacebook

Twitter just had an Oscars first: a commercial.

The company ran an ad during the broadcast, celebrating women with the hashtag #HereWeAre. The black-and-white spot featured prominent women from the entertainment industry reading poetry, ending with the words “this is how you create a new world.”

The #HereWeAre hashtag originated at CES when Twitter organized an event featuring women in the tech industry after the trade show insisted that it couldn’t find any women speakers to keynote the annual event.

We stand with women around the world to make their voices heard and their presence known. To bring them front and center, today and every day. Join us as we say #HereWeAre pic.twitter.com/cN2Ik6bZU8
