Netflix exec to Danny Masterson accuser: ‘We don’t believe’ rape allegations

TwitterFacebook

Netflix’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual abuse allegations is coming into question.

The Huffington Post reported Monday on a conversation between a woman who has accused Danny Masterson, star of Netflix show The Ranch, of raping her; and an executive at the company, who were at the same youth soccer game over the weekend. When the woman confronted the executive, director of global kids content Andy Yeatman, he told her that he and other Netflix higher-ups “don’t believe” the accusers – without knowing that she was one.

‘Bryan Singer fired from Queen biopic after no-shows, clashes with Rami Malek

TwitterFacebook

Bryan Singer bites the dust – but apparently not for the reason many have been anticipating.

The director of the X-Men movies has been fired from the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Mashable has confirmed, reportedly over clashes with the film’s star Rami Malek and others. Tension on the set caused Singer to no-show several times, forcing the film’s cinematographer to step in on multiple occasions, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In one particularly tense moment, Malek – who’s playing Freddie Mercury – got into an altercation in which Singer threw an object. Another source tells THR that Singer claims he didn’t return after the Thanksgiving break because he’s suffering from PTSD due to the toxic environment on set. Read more…

Brock Turner’s lawyers want to overturn his sexual assault conviction

TwitterFacebook

Brock Turner is trying to have his sexual assault conviction overturned.

Turner was convicted last year of assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster in 2015 and served three months at the county jail. What could have been a 14-year turn in a state penitentiary turned into a six month sentence — later cut in half, for good behavior — sparking outrage.

Turner’s lawyer believes the jury was unfairly prejudiced against him due to the use of the phrase, “behind a dumpster.” He contends in a statement that this “implied an intent on the appellant’s part to shield and sequester his activities” and “implied moral depravity, callousness and culpability on the appellant’s part because of the inherent connotations of filth, garbage, detritus and criminal activity frequently associated with dumpsters.” Read more…

Women in Film launches help line for victims of sexual harassment

TwitterFacebook

This watershed moment in acknowledging and acting on allegations of sexual harassment has rightfully extended beyond Hollywood, but there’s a reason we’re still calling it The Weinstein Effect. Now, advocacy group Women in Film (WIF) is taking steps to ensure victims in the entertainment industry continue to be heard.

Today they launched a help line — available at (323) 545-0333 Monday through Friday, 10am-5pm PST — for harassment victims in the entertainment world of any gender. The line is aimed at helping survivors decide the path forward for them, and, if they choose it, provides a pro bono legal aid panel, as well as resources for connecting callers with mental health counselors, law enforcement, and both civil and criminal litigators. Lena Dunham defends ‘Girls’ writer accused of rape

TwitterFacebook

“Girls” creator Lena Dunham and her co-producer and writer Jenni Konner have defended a writer from the HBO show who was accused of raping a 17-year-old actress. He was 35 at the time of the alleged assault.

The allegations against writer Murray Miller, now 40, were reported Friday by The Wrap. Actress Aurora Perrineau, currently 23, filed a police report earlier this year claiming he raped her in 2012 after a drunken night out. Dunham and Konner sent a statement late Friday to The Hollywood Reporter, essentially calling Perrineau a liar.

“While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year,” they wrote. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the rate of false reporting for sexual assault ranges from 2 percent to 8 percent. Read more…

Reddit bans board where men posted misogynistic content and even advocated rape

TwitterFacebook

Reddit’s crackdown on violent content continues with the ban of a board called “Involuntary Celibates” /r/Incels in which people posted misogynistic content and even incited rape.

In its description, the community said it was a “support group for people who lack romantic relationships and sex.”

But a quick look on some cached posts shows the board was a hornet’s nest for brutal hate content directed at women, who are described as “femoids” or “fembots”:

Other posts are titled  “all women are sluts”  and “females love getting abused by good looking men.” Read more…
