I wish I’d had this illustrated guide to periods as a teenager

TwitterFacebook

My first period showed up out of the blue like an unwelcome guest that I was highly unprepared for. I didn’t know what I was looking at, what was normal, what was safe to do, or who to talk to.

Most of all, though, I was mortified by the very idea of having blood coming out of my private parts. Could people tell? What if I bled onto my clothes? This embarrassment prevented me from telling literally anyone — even my own mother — for the first few years of my menstruating life. This meant that I didn’t have proper access to period products and had to make do with pads that I pilfered from my mum’s bathroom in the hope she wouldn’t notice. My teenage years were full of makeshift, creative ways of trying (and often failing) to stem the flow of menstrual blood that I was woefully ill-equipped to manage.  Read more…

Best gift ideas for teenage girls: Stuff she’ll actually want to show off on Instagram

TwitterFacebook

Warning: If you thought shopping for women in general was hard, just know that it gets harder. Try shopping for a teenage girl.

Juuls, Tide Pods, Converse (but only the white ones), and saying LOL (ironically) — yup, we’re talking about the ever-changing hell that is teenage girl trends. It can be tricky to choose a gift that she’ll like and use for longer than a month, but does that mean you throw in the towel and plop a gift card in an envelope? That’s basically code for “I don’t get you at all.”

Instead of resorting to looking like an old, there is a way to show the teenage girl on your gift list that you “get them.” We’re talking music tech, phone accessories, room decor, artsy cameras, and more — all things to help her live her best life with her friends, branch out and be social, and help her figure out her passions. (Also known as gifts that won’t be met with an eye roll or her tweeting about you.)  Read more…

Sarah Jessica Parker agrees ‘Sex and the City’ was ‘tone deaf’ on diversity

Fashionably late as ever, Sarah Jessica Parker has come to a conclusion most of us came to years ago: Sex and the City didn’t age as gracefully as its cast.
The main actress behind the beloved, decades-old show even went as far to call it “tone…

Young Rohingya refugees find hope in friendship

TwitterFacebook

Tasmin Ara, Mustakima, Nur Akter, and Showkat Atu arrived at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, a year ago.

The girls, all of whom are 10 with the exception of 12-year-old Showkat Atu, have developed a system for surviving Kutupalong: They make friends with every new girl who’s forced to call the world’s largest refugee camp her home.

“It is hard when you first arrive, so we help by sharing food and clothes,” Mustakima recently told Plan International, a child rights and humanitarian organization that provides services in Kutupalong. (Plan Internernational identified the girls, who participate in the nonprofit’s programs, by only their first names.) Read more…

You’d think observations about what it’s like to live with the opposite sex would be pretty much old hat by now.

Surely, now that we’re in 2017, it’s all been said before at some point?

Well, maybe — but Roberto Carlos’ 32-point Twitter list about what it’s like to live with all girls for a week certainly seems to have struck some chord.

Here’s the thread in full:

A thread about what I learned whilst living with girls for one week is going live at 10pm

Lena Dunham defends ‘Girls’ writer accused of rape

TwitterFacebook

“Girls” creator Lena Dunham and her co-producer and writer Jenni Konner have defended a writer from the HBO show who was accused of raping a 17-year-old actress. He was 35 at the time of the alleged assault.

The allegations against writer Murray Miller, now 40, were reported Friday by The Wrap. Actress Aurora Perrineau, currently 23, filed a police report earlier this year claiming he raped her in 2012 after a drunken night out. Dunham and Konner sent a statement late Friday to The Hollywood Reporter, essentially calling Perrineau a liar.

“While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year,” they wrote. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the rate of false reporting for sexual assault ranges from 2 percent to 8 percent. Read more…
