The internet has changed how kids learn about sex, but sex ed in the classroom still sucks. In Sex Ed 2.0, Mashable explores the state of sex ed and imagines a future where digital innovations are used to teach consent, sex positivity, respect, and responsibility.

Relying on schools for quality sex education doesn’t cut it, unfortunately. 

Sex ed in the U.S. hasn’t traditionally been the most inclusive — or accurate. Only 24 states and D.C. require sex education, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization focused on reproductive health and rights. Abstinence-only education, preferred in many school districts, has been proven to be ineffective at reducing teen pregnancy and STDs, and LGBTQ youth rarely see themselves represented in health or sex ed classes.  Read more…

Woman orders ‘Summa Cum Laude’ cake, gets the censored version instead

Cara Koscinski just wanted a nice dessert for her son’s graduation party. What she received was a cake that she says prompted “total embarrassment” and multiple conversations about the alternative meaning of the Latin word “cum.”

In a Facebook post shared Sunday, Koscinski of South Carolina shared photos of a cake she’d ordered from her local Publix supermarket. Though the cake was meant to read, “Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018,” she was surprised to see the word “Cum” — Latin for “with”; slang for… you know — replaced with dashes.

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

An actress goes to an audition. She wants the part — she likes the part. But, as usual, it’s a female character written by male creators. And she’s troubled that the character’s first scene involves giving a guy a blow job.

Here’s the part of the story we’re not accustomed to hearing: She spoke up about it.

The actress told a room of Hollywood men with the power to deny her the role that she would not play a character who’s introduced to the audience on her knees. More unusual still, the men unequivocally agreed with her, promising to change the oversight.

“Now whether these men all of a sudden saw it from her point of view and realized it was an undignified way to introduce the character — or they thought, ‘Urgh, we’re in the middle of #MeToo.
