‘Simpsons’ show runner responds to controversy on Twitter and…ugh.

TwitterFacebook

The Simpsons‘ show runner Al Jean responded to backlash to Sunday’s episode, in which characters implied that criticism of Apu (Hank Azaria) as a racial stereotype was overblown.

Jean teased the response he expected to Sunday’s episode, entitled “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” tweeting that evening “New Simpsons in five minutes. Twitter explosion in act three.”

As of Friday, after many takes and exhausting debates and interpretations of Apu, Jean weighed back in on Twitter.

.@TheSimpsons I truly appreciate all responses pro and con. Will continue to try to find an answer that is popular & more important right

‘The Simpsons’ completely missed the mark in addressing Apu criticism

TwitterFacebook

By now, dear reader, you may have surmised that some of us are Mad Online™ about how The Simpsons addressed its largest and longest-running controversy: The character of Apu. Sunday’s episode had Lisa and Marge vaguely alluding to the Apu controversy only to shrug it off and say they might never address it – and that’s just sad.

#TheSimpsons completely toothless response to @harikondabolu #TheProblemWithApu about the racist character Apu:

People feel let down by ‘The Simpsons’ response to Apu stereotyping

TwitterFacebook

The Simpsons has responded to the Apu stereotyping controversy, and not everyone is down with how it was handled.

In the fifteenth episode of Season 29, “No Good Read Goes Unpunished,” Marge reads Lisa “her favourite book ever,” The Princess in the Garden, which has troubling stereotypes of Irishmen and South Americans.

Aghast at the depictions she didn’t recognise as a youngster, Marge edits the book to make it ostensibly less offensive for this day and age. The book’s lead character Clara is now a “cisgender girl,” who releases wild horses and fights net neutrality.  Read more…

These images of front-facing ‘Simpsons’ characters are guaranteed to give you nightmares

If you want to stare into the face of true evil, turns out all you need to do is look at a Simpsons character head on.

It’s not a sight that’s meant for fragile human eyes.

On Tuesday, this was proven beyond any reasonable doubt.

Pretty conclusive, right? Marge seems to be the only character that’s immune.

this is like the only pure front facing simps picture & the only reason why is because it’s marge pic.twitter.com/V85ecaSors

Evil genius Elon Musk confirms we can all buy his super dangerous flamethrower now

TwitterFacebook

Elon Musk has a cool new weapon for sale and TBH we should all be deeply, deeply concerned.

On Saturday the tech genius (who may or may not be evil) posted photographs and video of The Boring Company’s brand new flamethrower, which is apparently now for sale to the general public, and can already be pre-ordered for $500.00.

Say hello to my little friend …

Cool cool, not terrifying at all.

“Buy an overpriced Boring Company fire extinguisher! You can definitely buy one for less elsewhere, but this one comes with a cool sticker and the button is conveniently riiight above,” the flamethrower’s description jokingly reads. Read more…

‘The Simpsons’ star hints at plans to address Apu criticism

TwitterFacebook

Actor Hank Azaria, the voice of Apu from The Simpsons,  spoke at a TCA panel about Apu’s controversy over the years. Even as the series continues, Apu might not pass the bar for cultural sensitivity in 2018 and beyond.

“As far as what’s going to happen with the character going forward, it’s really not just up to me,” Azaria said at TCA. “I know that The Simpsons guys are doing that too, they’re giving it a lot of thought and we’ve discussed a little bit. They will definitely address, maybe publicly, certainly creatively within the context of the show what they want to do, if anything, with the character.” Read more…
