The horribly bleak answer to that lingering question in ‘Black Mirror’

This story contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 4, episode 1.

The premiere and most talked about episode of Black Mirror‘s fourth season, “USS Callister,” ended on an uncharacteristically happy note — or at least happy for a show seemingly engineered to induce sickening paranoia in its viewers.

Or so we thought.

Because according to actor Jimmi Simpson, and in true Black Mirror fashion, there’s a “but” to even the moderately happy ending of “USS Calister.” In an Entertainment Weekly interview, he revealed a personal pet theory to the lingering question of what exactly became of his lovable Spock stand-in, Walton. ‘Black Mirror’ gets it dangerously wrong about abortion

TwitterFacebook

This story contains spoilers about Black Mirror Season Four, Episode Two.

The new season of Black Mirror makes a completely misleading, and medically inaccurate error in its portrayal of abortion. An error that’s actually really dangerous.

To recap, “Arkangel”—the second episode of the dystopian series’ fourth season— tells the story of a mother, Marie, who surveils her teen daughter Sara using a chip that’s been implanted in her brain. Through this monitoring software, Sara’s mum learns that her daughter is pregnant. We then see Marie going to a pharmacy shortly before she crushes two pills which she adds to a smoothie for her daughter.  Read more…

Black Mirror idea: Future of Tinder for people who want kids. You give the app your DNA, then swipe left or right on realistic generated photos of the kids it knows you would make with the other users. Freaky!

Karl Pilkington totally predicted 2 ‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 storylines

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Contains mild spoilers for Black Mirror Season 4, episode 6.

If there’s one thing The Ricky Gervais Show and An Idiot Abroad have taught us, it’s that Karl Pilkington has some unusual ideas about the world.

Turns out they make glorious Black Mirror storylines, though.

On Sunday, YouTuber matt published a video that pairs two ideas Karl Pilkington had on The Ricky Gervais Show with two storylines that crop up in the “Black Museum” episode of Black Mirror Season 4 — the second of which, in particular, is almost spookily accurate. Read more…

‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 isn’t f*cking around

TwitterFacebook

Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 4, episode 1, “U.S.S. Callister.”

After three seasons of exploring the perverse perils and promise of technology, we know what we’re signing up for with Black Mirror. In its fourth season – second on Netflix – Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones’ twisted reflection of our society works like a well-oiled machine; they’re adept at quick world building, judicious with plot twists, and clearly full of endless ideas on how technology may unravel us yet.

The Season 4 premiere, “U.S.S. Callister,” opens with a pitch-perfect Star Trek parody that gives an irresistible glimpse into the showrunners’ comedy background. Jesse Plemons plays Captain Richard Daley with a sly but not campy dash of William Shatner’s James Kirk. Daley is adored by his crew and feared by his enemies; he always chooses the right course of action and saves the day, winning everyone’s admiration and a few kisses from the females aboard the Callister (fun space fact: one of those is actress Michaela Coel, who also plays a small part in the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi Read more…

‘Black Mirror’ Season 4 will arrive in time to top off your 2017

TwitterFacebook

The final trailer for Black Mirror Season 4 is almost hopeful.

Cutting together footage from six new episodes – “Black Museum,” “Arkangel,” “Hang the D.J.,” “Crocodile,” “U.S.S. Callister,” and “Metalhead” – the trailer gets somehow creepier when set to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”

“In every world we’ve set up…you have to understand the appeal and understand why you’d use that technology and then we begin to sort of explore what could go wrong,” show creator Annabel Jones said at New York Comic Con. This season explores extending the consciousness, the use of memory in criminal investigation, and a world ruled by dating algorithms – to name a few. Read more…
