The quest to binge-read ‘Lord of the Rings’ in one day

TwitterFacebook

In Binged, Mashable breaks down why we binge media, and what it does to us.

Tolkien is in. Again.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, war veteran and Oxford medieval language professor who died more than 45 years ago, is about to be the subject of another of those global waves of fame that so perplexed him when he was alive

This May sees the release of Tolkien, a big-budget American movie focused on his early years. Last year, the world’s richest man gave an estimated $250 million to the Tolkien estate so he could develop what he hopes is the successor to the global smash hit Game of Thrones, which ends this year. It will be a billion-dollar, five-plus season epic titled — you guessed it — Lord of the Rings Read more…

Let people do whatever they want with their dang books, sheesh

TwitterFacebook

If you follow a lot of people who watch a lot of Netflix, then you’ve probably spent a lot of 2019 so far watching them argue about books. Specifically, about Tidying Up with Marie Kondo‘s approach to books.

“Keep your tidy, spark-joy hands off my book piles, Marie Kondo,” gasped The Washington Post“Marie Kondo, back off! Why this book hoarder refuses to tidy up,” declared Cnet. On Twitter, some bibliophiles expressed shock and horror, while others reacted to that shock and horror with snark and bemusement

Beyond ‘Bandersnatch’: How to keep choosing your own adventure

TwitterFacebook

You are obsessed with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. If it were a 1980s cassette tape, you would have worn this interactive story down by playing it over and over, trying to guide the main character Stefan to all five endings. Nothing could dissuade you — not the seemingly random limits on which devices can play it, nor the $25 million trademark lawsuit from the makers of Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) books

But once you’ve reached all endings, what then? You’d like to keep this interactive buzz going — at an appropriately adult story level, since, let’s be honest, those slim old-school CYOAs look a little childish and schlocky by comparison.  Read more…

J.K. Rowling shares writing advice, destroys troll who dares to question her

TwitterFacebook

J.K. Rowling’s last few tweets may have been fairly light-hearted and dog-themed, but that doesn’t mean she’s left her troll-destroying ways completely behind her.

Oh no. Judging by her latest exchange, the Harry Potter author won’t be backing down from the occasional Twitter dual in 2019.

It started on Tuesday, when Rowling tweeted a link to some writing advice she’s recently posted on her website.

I’m often asked questions about writing, so here are some answers too long for Twitter! https://t.co/atmzlUy2Cj

Pottermore’s unnecessary poop tweet reminds us that wizards are gross, we’re all overthinking things

TwitterFacebook

Pottermore recently resurfaced a wizarding world fun fact that has Harry Potter fans losing it on Twitter. Pottermore reminded fans – or in most cases, informed them – that before plumbing, wizards used to “relieve themselves” literally anywhere and then magically vanish any excrement.

…oh.

This fun-slash-frightening fact depending on your perspective comes from the Pottermore page about the Chamber of Secrets, which, if you recall, is only accessible via ancient plumbing channels.

18 of the best books written by women in 2018

TwitterFacebook

So, it’s almost the end of the year. Time to put your feet up, grab a mince pie, and curl up with a good book.

Some truly brilliant books have been published by women in 2018 — so many, in fact, that it was nigh-on impossible to whittle down the list to just 18 books.

But, here are 18 books that really stood out this year, grabbed our attention and didn’t let go until we’d reached the very last page.

Here are 18 of the best books by women in 2018.

1.

Normal People

By Sally Rooney

Sally Rooney’s second novel Normal People is just so damn readable. It tells the story of two young people, both from very different backgrounds, who embark on a secret relationship. The writing feels so strikingly intimate that you start to feel deeply invested in Connell and Marianne’s lives as they leave the town they grew up in to start their studies at Trinity College Dublin. Not for some time has book captured so the complexity of millennials and their relationships in such a sensitive and relatable fashion.  Read more…

George RR Martin just dropped some pretty teasing lines about the release of ‘Winds of Winter’

TwitterFacebook

George RR Martin knows what you want and he promises to give it to you. But first, he will tease you for a bit.

The author just published a blogpost where he stated that he’s back to work on the sixth instalment of A song of Ice and Fire and even made mention of what all of us are desperate to know; what’s up with The Winds of Winter and when will we get to read it?

“I know you want Winds, and I am going to give it to you…” Martin writes, thanking fans for not being upset with him for taking the time to write the 700-page Targaryen history Fire and Blood in between volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire. “I am delighted that you stayed with me for [Fire and Blood] as well. Your patience and unflagging support means the world to me. Ryan Reynolds is producing a horror story that started as a series on Reddit

TwitterFacebook

In the age of the internet, you don’t necessarily need a best-selling book series to land a film deal.

Sometimes a collection of viral Reddit posts will do the job.

On Wednesday, Variety broke the news that Ryan Reynolds will be producing The Patient Who Nearly Drove Me Out of Medicine — a horror story based on a series originally published by writer Jasper DeWitt on Reddit’s r/nosleep sub.

Reynolds has since retweeted the story, and DeWitt has also posted about it.

So thrilled to be working with @VancityReynolds on this! https://t.co/RgT1ztKZZD
