‘Doctor Who’ history made: Jodie Whittaker aces American debut

TwitterFacebook

Finally, a world of Doctor Who fans has seen the result of a very brave and controversial decision, unprecedented in the show’s 55-year history.

That’s right: in Sunday’s episode, for the first time ever, most characters on the show — including the lead — speak with broad Yorkshire accents.

Luckily, that trail was blazed by Game of Thrones, so hopefully most American audiences can understand what the hell this Sheffield crew is talking about.

Oh yes, and Jodie Whittaker just happens to be the first woman to play the Doctor. But judging by a packed house of fans at Madison Square Garden, where Whittaker and incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall watched and discussed her first episode live with New York Comic Con attendees, that part was not controversial in the slightest.  Read more…

Jodie Whittaker’s ‘Doctor Who’ interview contains spectacular subtitle error

TwitterFacebook

Subtitles, whether they come from a machine or a fast-typing human, can often be an accident waiting to happen.

Jodie Whittaker’s recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert provides glorious proof of this.

Her response to Colbert’s question about where she’s from, for instance, was: “I am from Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire.”

Here’s how that sentence appeared in the subtitles, though:

Oh dear.

It isn’t 100% clear whether those subtitles were written by a human or generated by an algorithm, but either way the result is pretty spectacular. Read more…

Even the Doctor is surprised to find out she’s a woman in new ‘Doctor Who’ clip

TwitterFacebook

This first look at Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor on Doctor Who shows a typically scrambled post-regeneration Doctor — with a catch. The Doctor doesn’t know she’s a woman yet. To be fair, she seems to take the news in stride and is more interested in meeting her new buddies Ryan and Yaz.

Still not ginger though.  Read more…

‘Doctor Who’ showrunner insisted new Doctor be a woman

TwitterFacebook

When Doctor Who returns on Oct. 7, Jodie Whittaker will make her debut as the eponymous Time Lord. It’s the first time a woman will have that role, and — as we now know — that’s entirely by design.

“We knew in our gut it was about time, and it felt like the right decision, and the character is non-gender specific in any way, really,” executive producer Matt Strevens told Digital Spy in a recent interview.

“If ever there was a character that was never defined by gender, it’s the Doctor. The Doctor is gender fluid in that sense.”  Read more…

2 actors who played Doctor Who hugged IRL and fans were like woah

TwitterFacebook

It’s the stuff that Whovians dream of. But, over the weekend, it became a reality.

Two actors who played Doctor Who met IRL and their greeting couldn’t have been more lovely.

Christopher Eccleston — who played the Ninth Doctor — and Matt Smith — who played the Eleventh Doctor — spotted each other at London Film and Comic Con and gave each other a massive hug.

Twitter user @Twelveslapels tweeted photos of the pair locked in a handshake.

‘Doctor Who’ new season trailer asks: Will you be Jodie Whittaker’s best friend?

TwitterFacebook

“All of this is new to me,” says the Doctor. And she’s not alone.

The trailer for Doctor Who Season 11, starring Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord’s first female incarnation, was released at San Diego Comic Con Thursday. And while the locations we glimpsed are familiar to any Who fan — quarries, beaches, corridors, the wreck of an alien ship — there’s a distinct freshness to it all.

Part of that comes from Whittaker’s youthful energy, which makes a distinct change from grumpy predecessor Peter Capaldi. It bubbles out through words spoken in her native Yorkshire accent. (Other than “brilliant!”, the one word she spoke in the final post-regeneration scene of last year’s “Twice Upon A Time,” we’ve never heard Whittaker talk in character as the Doctor before.)  Read more…

Exterminate plans, there’s an epic ‘Doctor Who’ marathon streaming on Twitch

TwitterFacebook

Exterminate plans, a seven-week Doctor Who marathon is coming to Twitch.

The social streaming platform has announced a partnership with BBC Studios which will see the first ever online broadcasting event of the classic Doctor Who series.

We’re talking 500 glorious episodes from 26 seasons of TARDIS-fuelled adventures with your favourite Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, shown over a seven-week period from May 29 to July 23.

The episodes will range from the show’s humble beginnings in 1963 and run all the way to the 1980s — the William Hartnell, Tom Baker, and Jon Pertwee years, not the Matt Smith, David Tennant, or Peter Capaldi series of recent times.  Read more…
