The bumpiest social media moments of the 2020 campaign so far

TwitterFacebook

We’re only just getting over our 2018 midterms hangover, and now the 2020 presidential race is upon us.

That means any number of candidates are starting to hit the campaign trail — and some are already misfiring on all cylinders. From here on out, every single move candidates make will be scrutinized to the fullest extent that the grinding internet news cycle will allow.

Some of the bumbles are minor, but there are others that could hint at further trouble ahead. Here, then, are a few examples of early missteps from candidates who are either already in on the race or are flirting awfully heavily with the idea. Read more…

Trump appears to mock Elizabeth Warren with genocide joke and people are livid

TwitterFacebook

It’s rare to see President Trump reference American history, but when he does, it’s normally either (1) wrong or (2) evil.

Consider his tweet on Saturday, which mocked Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren using a racist slur and then seemingly referenced the Trail of Tears, the 19th century Native American genocide.

“Today Elizabeth Warren, sometimes referred to by me as Pocahontas, joined the race for President,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Will she run as our first Native American presidential candidate, or has she decided that after 32 years, this is not playing so well anymore? See you on the campaign TRAIL, Liz!” Read more…

Donald Trump mocked #MeToo and said Elizabeth Warren should take a DNA test. She is not amused.

TwitterFacebook

Elizabeth Warren thinks it’s high time Donald Trump stops obsessing over her genes.

On Thursday, after the president brought up Warren’s Native American heritage again at a Montana campaign rally, saying he’d like her to take a DNA test to prove her ancestry, Warren replied via Twitter criticizing his administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and giving Trump a serious reality check.

Hey, @realDonaldTrump: While you obsess over my genes, your Admin is conducting DNA tests on little kids because you ripped them from their mamas & you are too incompetent to reunite them in time to meet a court order. Maybe you should focus on fixing the lives you’re destroying.

Elizabeth Warren got a new puppy because everything else is bad

TwitterFacebook

Dogs can’t solve the world’s problems, but they are still extremely good. Elizabeth Warren knows this.

The Massachusetts senator, a longtime dog fan, tweeted a photo of her new, as-yet-unnamed pup on Sunday. “When I got back from Washington on Thursday night, [her husband] Bruce had someone new waiting for me,” she wrote. “There’s a lot of pain and chaos in the world right now — we decided to bring a little gentleness and normalcy into our lives.”

It’s true: this good boy screams gentleness and normalcy. In fact, I just looked up “gentle” in the dictionary and this photo was in there! How did it get printed in a physical book so fast? Wow. Read more…

Senators set to vote on the GOP tax bill and they can’t even read it

TwitterFacebook

We’ve all been there. You have your assignment printed and ready to go, but are frantically scribbling down last minute additions in the desperate hope that you’ll get a passing grade.

This was OK in high school English class, but what about in the U.S. Senate?

After several failed attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare, Senate Republicans are really doing everything they can get a legislative win once and for all with their tax plan—including making hasty and nearly illegible handwritten notes and straight up crossed out sections of the bill.

Trump’s called Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ at least 26 times—and it’s not OK

TwitterFacebook

Since Aug. 2014, Donald Trump has referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” at least 26 times.

He mostly slings the slur on Twitter, but he’s also repeated it during rallies, interviews, and at meetings with fellow government officials — all attempts to discredit the senator by painting her with an offensive nickname that propagates one of Trump’s pet conspiracy theories.

His most recent use of the term was particularly tone deaf: he slid a non sequitur reference to “Pocahontas” in while speaking with Navajo code talkers at the White House on Tuesday — people the president was supposed to be honoring, but ended up deriding. Read more…
