How to functionally abandon email

TwitterFacebook

Let’s face it: Email is a drag.

Whatever shine unsolicited links and messages once had back in the early days of the internet is long gone. Today, the contents of your inbox are likely closely aligned with that of your cellphone’s voicemail — unwanted and unchecked.

It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s within your power to functionally give up email. It is surprisingly easy, and feels so, so good.

First off, let’s all agree that writing and replying to emails is a pain. Even the companies that provide the service know it’s unbearably tedious. Google has tried to make things less burdensome on the senders’ end with Gmail’s Smart Reply and Smart Compose features, and on the receivers’ end with Nudges, but those are just annoying Band-Aids on the festering wound of obligation.   Read more…

Guy emails 246 Nicoles in search of a girl he met at a bar, and now they’re all friends

TwitterFacebook

Apparently Tinder is just too basic for some people.

Carlos Zetina only knew a handful of things about the girl he met at a campus bar: her name was Nicole, she was from Holland, she attended the University of Calgary, and she thought Nietzche was depressing.

When the number she gave him ended up being wrong, he decided to pursue the missed connection in the most extra way: He combed through the University of Calgary’s entire email list, and messaged every Nicole he could find in one mass email:

Zetina emailed 246 Nicoles in total, including students, staff, and faculty members. Even associate deans named Nicole were part of his quest to find his dream Nicole. He was thorough, too — according to BuzzFeed, Zetina added variations like Nicolette and Nickie in his search.  Read more…

Yahoo and AOL will continue to scan your emails for precious advertising data

TwitterFacebook

If you’re a Yahoo or AOL email user, advertisers have a pretty good picture of exactly who you are because Yahoo and AOL are scanning your emails.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Oath, the Verizon subsidiary that owns both email providers, “has been pitching a service to advertisers that analyzes more than 200 million Yahoo Mail inboxes and the rich user data they contain.” This data is then used to figure out what products and services to target its users with. The pitch also broadens out to bring AOL users’ emails into the fold.

After Verizon acquired AOL in 2015 and then Yahoo in 2017, the telecommunications giant rolled the two companies under a subsidiary that houses its digital content properties called Oath. Properties such as Huffington Post, Engadget, Tumblr, and Techcrunch all operate under the Oath umbrella. Using this data obtained through users’ emails, Oath can offer its advertisers precision ad targeting across these digital media properties. Read more…
