Brave man went on a harrowing quest to become a Bloomin’ Onion mascot

TwitterFacebook

Some people are just content to live. But some won’t others until they can wear a giant fried food costume at a football game.

Every year on Jan. 1 Outback Steakhouse sponsors the Outback Bowl, a big college football game that also features a bizarre fried mascot: a Bloomin’ Onion, just like the one you can find on the steakhouse’s menu.

Ryan Nanni, a contributor for SB Nation, announced at the beginning of this year that he was on a quest to don the fried onion costume for the big game. To underline this, his Twitter bio reads, “My only professional goal for 2017: to serve as the Blooming Onion at the next Outback Bowl.” Read more…

Onefootball founder and CEO Lucas Von Cranach, whose popular football app now has 25 million fans in 200 countries around the world, confirmed on stage today at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin 2017 that his company has raised more funding — including both an unreported Series B and C round. Toys for Tots is partnering with the Green Bay Packers right in time for the holidays

TwitterFacebook

In 1947, a group of Marine Reservists lead by Major Bill Hendricks collected around 5,000 toys and handed them out to underprivileged children in Los Angeles. This charitable act was inspired in part by Hendricks’ wife, Diane, who felt frustration after being unable to find an organization that would accept and donate her homemade doll.

Thus began Toys for Tots, a program now run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve that has given out roughly 512 million toys to hundreds of millions of needy children.

On December 3, the organization is taking up temporary residency in an unlikely spot: The parking lot of Wisconsin’s Lambeau Field. Capitalizing on the love of Wisconsin’s love of football, The Green Bay Packers’ Toys for Tots collection will take place at the historic stadium prior to the Green Bay Packers-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game.  Read more…

Shania Twain arrives to halftime show on a dogsled in a blizzard because, well, she’s Shania

TwitterFacebook

Shania Twain knows how to make an entrance, even during the most inclement performance conditions.

She rolled up to her halftime performance at the Canadian Football League’s championship game— the Grey Cup—during a blizzard. Shania rocked up to the snow-covered stadium in Ottawa in a mode of transport befitting the weather conditions—a dogsled. And, you know what? That does impress me much.

But, Shania didn’t cower under an umbrella or an anorak. She was resplendent in a pink glitter catsuit and red fur jacket. Read more…

Footballer leaves game after scoring two goals to catch the birth of his baby

TwitterFacebook

Does two goals and a new baby count as a hattrick?

Footballer Ryan Colclough had a truly extraordinary night on Tuesday. Wigan were playing Doncaster and he was on top form having scored one goal already, when at half-time he heard that his partner had gone into labour.

He stayed just long enough to score Wigan’s third goal of the match, before rushing off to be with his partner as she gave birth to their son.

Congrats to Ryan Colclough who scored a brace tonight in our win before being substituted to make it in time to see the birth of his son! 👏🏼 pic.twitter.com/Efvjk9P3sw

Angry soccer player celebrates goal by giving teammate the finger

TwitterFacebook

Soccer games can sometimes get pretty heated, and fights on the pitch aren’t exactly an uncommon occurrence.

They don’t usually take place between two members of the same team, though.

On Sunday, Flamengo took on Corinthians in Brazil’s Série A football league.

At some point in the match, Vizeu and Rhodolfo — two Flamengo players — almost got into a fully-fledged fight.

Antes do 3º gol, Vizeu e Rhodolfo se estranharam. Logo depois, Vizeu fez gol, mandou dedo pro Rhodolfo, que ameaçou bater nele no vestiário. Tenso… 👀pic.twitter.com/DGaJoIzw83
